Position Overview

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is looking for dedicated consultants in the field of critical care. This role presents an exceptional opportunity for a rewarding consultant position within a picturesque yet accessible rural setting. The full-time roles consist of ten programmed activities (10 PA) per week, primarily based at our healthcare facility. The expected distribution of duties includes seven sessions dedicated to direct clinical care (DCC) and three sessions for supporting professional activities (SPA), adhering to the Consultant contract guidelines.

We welcome applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds, including those specializing in intensive care medicine, emergency medicine, or other relevant specialties.

Key Responsibilities

The daily operations of the critical care unit involve two consultants present throughout the day, supported by junior medical staff. The consultants will alternate as the lead for the unit, overseeing operations from Monday to Sunday, followed by an uncontracted week off. Currently, the unit is staffed by eight consultants, with plans to expand the team to enhance service delivery.

Clinical activities during the weeks following the on-call rotation will include a mix of theatre lists and critical care responsibilities, with flexibility for those holding additional specialties.

Out-of-hours responsibilities include participation in the critical care consultant on-call rota, currently structured as 1 in 8, with aspirations to adjust this to a 1 in 12 schedule as staffing levels increase.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Registration on the specialist register
  • Proof of eligibility for entry onto the specialist register
  • Completion of CCT within six months prior to the interview.

Desirable:

  • CCT in intensive care medicine
  • Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM)
  • European Diploma in Intensive Care / UK Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine (DICM)
  • FRCA
  • Other postgraduate qualifications

Experience and Skills

Essential:

  • Comprehensive experience in critical care

Desirable:

  • Consultant-level experience
  • Clinical background in anaesthesia
  • Specialist skills or relevant experience
  • Evidence of consultant-level responsibilities

Quality Improvement and Teaching

Essential:

  • Participation in quality improvement or audit initiatives
  • Experience in teaching medical trainees

Desirable:

  • Experience teaching nursing and paramedical staff
  • Teaching qualifications or courses

Communication Skills

Essential:

  • Effective oral communication skills
  • Ability to engage patients in their care
  • Proficient in written and verbal English
