Position Overview

An exciting opportunity has emerged for a dedicated Orthopaedic Specialist to join our dynamic team within the fracture and elective Orthopaedic Outpatient department.

The ideal candidate will possess outstanding communication abilities. This role encompasses working with patients in both outpatient and inpatient environments across Adult and Children's services.

To qualify for this position, candidates must hold the British Orthopaedic Association casting qualification and be registered with the Association of Orthopaedic Practitioners.

Applicants should demonstrate a high level of proficiency in casting, splinting, and bracing techniques, along with a comprehensive understanding of patient care involving plaster casts and orthotic devices, including awareness of potential complications.

We are looking for a proactive, patient-focused, and enthusiastic individual who can work independently while exhibiting excellent time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate should be motivated to enhance their own skills and collaborate with the team to foster the development of fellow team members.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and proficiency in Adult and Children's outpatient theatre and emergency services.

Key Responsibilities

• Demonstrate competence in the application, adjustment, and removal of various types of casts as directed by a clinician.

• Engage in the assessment, planning, and evaluation of care for patients requiring casting or splinting, consulting with clinicians as necessary.

• Evaluate initial conditions and provide recommendations to clinicians regarding appropriate actions and materials.

• Secure informed consent from patients prior to implementing care plans.

• Promptly notify the nurse in charge of any concerns or risks within the clinical environment.

• Offer expert technical support and advice, along with a casting service for the Trust, covering fracture and elective clinics, theatres, wards, and emergency departments across both adult and children services.

• Utilize evidence-based practices to assess, develop, and implement patient care.

• Provide guidance on the application of casts for specialized conditions, including total contact casting and wound care for diabetic patients, as well as hip spicas for pediatric patients.

• Instruct clinical staff on the use and application of splints and braces while maintaining competency records.

• Identify individual patient issues and prioritize care accordingly.

• Execute relevant aspects of care, including dressings, suture/clip removals, and K wire removal.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Qualified Practitioner with British Orthopaedic Association Registration.

Desirable

  • Progress towards relevant university-accredited post-basic study programs.

Essential

  • Ability to create, modify, and apply specialized braces while supporting the provision of Orthotic services.
  • Manage wound care in accordance with theoretical and practical elements based on Trust policies and procedures.
  • Recognize symptoms that pose a threat to life or limb and intervene as necessary.
  • In the area of specialty, assess and make clinical judgments to determine appropriate interventions and demonstrate competence in relevant clinical skills.
  • Teaching and supervisory capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, effectively engaging with patients, caregivers, relatives, and other staff members.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in Trauma and Orthopaedic casting, functional bracing, and musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology.
  • Broad knowledge and experience of clinical practice within a hospital setting, along with specialized clinical and technical knowledge in the application and removal of all types of casting and bracing.
  • Significant and relevant experience post-qualification.
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team across various departments within adult and children services.
  • Experience in teaching.
