Job Overview

The Matron for Surgery/Theatres plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of patient care within the surgical division. This position is jointly accountable with the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director for overseeing the efficient management of patient flow and clinical governance.

As a senior member of the division, the Matron serves as a professional exemplar for nursing staff, taking necessary actions to maintain the high standards expected by the Trust and the nursing profession. This includes participating in hospital-specific shift arrangements to provide expert guidance and leadership during evenings, weekends, and bank holidays as needed.

Main Responsibilities

The Matron will:

  • Support patients, service users, and their families during various interactions.
  • Ensure the effective development, delivery, and monitoring of patient care services across the division.
  • Oversee the quality and timeliness of nursing care in line with relevant professional and local standards.
  • Guarantee that care is provided safely, efficiently, effectively, and promptly.

The successful candidate will manage the main theatres and pre-operative assessments, with support from the lead practitioner for surgery and the Directorate manager for critical care.

Job Responsibilities

The Matron will serve as a professional role model for nursing staff, ensuring adherence to the standards set by the Trust and the profession.

Our Trust is dedicated to safeguarding the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. All staff and volunteers are expected to share this commitment and adhere to our safeguarding policies and procedures.

This position will require an enhanced DBS check, and the successful candidate will be responsible for joining the DBS update service and paying the annual subscription fee.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Completion of a leadership and management course or currently pursuing one.
  • Degree-level education or relevant experience.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Allied Health Professional (AHP) registrant.

Desirable:

  • Proven experience in managing large budgets effectively.

Knowledge

Essential:

  • Comprehensive understanding of NHS developments affecting the Trust.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with HR policies and experience managing a significant number of staff.

Experience

Essential:

  • Ability to lead the directorate with vision and determination.
  • Strong written communication skills, including report analysis and presentation.
  • Effective oral presentation skills for conveying ideas to groups or individuals.
  • Capability to analyze complex issues and make informed decisions.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge and experience related to CQC accreditation and revalidation.
