Job Overview

Role Summary:

The successful candidate will be tasked with the secure sterilization and subsequent disposal of waste generated by the pathology laboratory.

This position requires close collaboration with laboratory personnel to ensure the compliant loading of sterilization equipment, the safe collection of Category 3 waste, and the proper execution of sterilization cycles. The candidate will be responsible for confirming successful cycles and addressing any failures in a timely manner.

Adherence to regulatory standards and departmental Standard Operating Procedures is essential to deliver an effective and compliant service.

While sterilization equipment is operational, the candidate will also engage in sterile services, endoscopy decontamination, and theatre logistics.

Key Responsibilities

The primary focus will be on the pathology decontamination sector, with secondary responsibilities in other areas as needed.

- Operate in alignment with departmental and national policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and Quality Management Systems to ensure a responsive service.

- Demonstrate proficiency and apply knowledge to all tasks related to the provision of pathology services, decontamination of endoscopes, and management of theatre instruments, ensuring efficient inventory management and timely service delivery.

- Report any incidents, non-conformities, or pertinent information to senior staff through the appropriate reporting systems.

- Take ownership of logging and escalating equipment failures to relevant stakeholders and management.

- Maintain cleanliness and organization in all work areas, ensuring a safe and pleasant environment in accordance with departmental protocols.

- Promptly report maintenance issues to the Estates department and coordinate with clinical teams to communicate potential delays.

About QE Facilities

QE Facilities is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, located in the North East of England.

We offer a variety of non-clinical services to NHS organizations, including estates management, facilities services, procurement, medical engineering, endoscopy decontamination, sterile services, transport, outpatient pharmacy, and training in the prevention and management of violence and aggression.

Additionally, we provide consultancy services to assist clients in establishing subsidiary companies within NHS frameworks and offer VAT compliance guidance.

Training and Development

- Attend mandatory and optional training sessions to maintain necessary skills and knowledge, which may require overnight travel.

- Engage in regular one-on-one meetings and personal development planning.

- Support departmental objectives by ensuring the monitoring, maintenance, and servicing of endoscopes and theatre instruments are conducted with minimal disruption, reporting to senior staff as necessary.

- Conduct routine tests in accordance with Planned Preventative Maintenance schedules and quality standards.

- Comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations and relevant risk assessments.

- Inspect equipment throughout the decontamination process to verify efficacy.

- Recognize and ensure the correct repacking of theatre trays and endoscopes, verifying the accuracy of loan devices and trays prior to clinical use.

- Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to the development or revision of standard operating procedures in response to service changes.

- The role may involve exposure to biological materials and unpleasant odors, and it is physically demanding, requiring significant manual handling.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • GCSE or equivalent education, including Mathematics and English.

Desirable:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Technical Certificate Decontamination or equivalent experience in decontamination training.
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing training throughout employment.

Skills

Essential:

  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Capacity to remain calm and productive under pressure.
  • Professional demeanor at all times.
  • Knowledge of infection control, health and safety, and COSHH regulations.

Desirable:

  • Experience in the decontamination of reusable medical devices.
  • Ability to train others in decontamination processes.

Experience

Essential:

  • Proven ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Proficient in keyboard, typing, and computer skills.
  • Familiarity with standard operating procedures.

Desirable:

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Background in decontamination or warehouse operations.
  • Involvement in quality assurance and innovation initiatives.
