Job Overview

Role Summary:

The successful candidate will primarily oversee the secure sterilization and subsequent disposal of materials generated by the pathology laboratory.

This position requires close collaboration with laboratory personnel to ensure compliant loading of sterilization equipment, safe collection of Category 3 waste, proper execution of sterilization cycles, and appropriate escalation of any cycle failures.

Certain responsibilities are regulated, necessitating adherence to both regulatory standards and departmental Standard Operating Procedures to guarantee a compliant and effective service.

During sterilizer operation, the role will involve working in sterile services, endoscopy decontamination, and managing logistics within the operating theatre.

Key Responsibilities

The primary focus will be on the pathology decontamination sector, with secondary duties in other areas.

Ensure compliance with departmental and national policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and Quality Management Systems to deliver a responsive service.

Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills effectively in all tasks related to pathology support, endoscope decontamination, and theatre instrument management, ensuring efficient inventory protocols and timely service delivery.

Report any incidents, discrepancies, or relevant information to senior staff using the designated incident reporting system.

Take ownership of logging and escalating equipment failures to appropriate stakeholders and management.

Maintain cleanliness and organization in all work areas, ensuring a safe and pleasant environment in accordance with departmental guidelines.

Promptly report maintenance issues to the Estates department and coordinate with clinical teams to communicate potential delays.

About QE Facilities

QE Facilities (QEF) operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, situated in the North East of England.

We deliver a variety of non-clinical services to GHNT and other NHS organizations, including estates management, facilities services, procurement, medical engineering, endoscopy decontamination, sterile services, transportation, outpatient pharmacy, and training in the prevention and management of violence and aggression.

Additionally, we offer consultancy services to assist clients in establishing subsidiary companies within NHS frameworks and provide VAT compliance guidance.

QE Facilities adheres to its own Terms and Conditions, which differ from those of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. Please note that we do not hold a sponsorship license and cannot offer employment under any sponsorship arrangement.

Job Responsibilities

Attend mandatory and non-mandatory training sessions to maintain and enhance knowledge and skills, which may require overnight stays away from home.

Engage in one-on-one meetings and personal development planning.

Support departmental requirements to ensure the monitoring, maintenance, and servicing of endoscopes and theatre instruments are conducted with minimal service disruption, reporting to senior staff as necessary.

Conduct routine tests and document results in line with Planned Preventative Maintenance schedules, quality standards, and guidelines.

Adhere to recommendations for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and relevant risk assessments.

Inspect equipment throughout the decontamination process to verify the effectiveness of procedures.

Identify devices by name and ensure that theatre trays and endoscopes are repacked accurately with the correct instruments and ancillary items, verifying the delivery of the correct items prior to clinical use.

Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to the development or revision of standard operating procedures in response to service changes and modernization efforts.

The role may involve contact with biological remnants and exposure to unpleasant odors.

This position is physically demanding and requires significant manual handling capabilities.
