Healthcare Support Worker in Forensic Mental Health

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Healthcare Support Worker to join our Specialist Low Secure Forensic Service, supporting men within both Yew and Willow wards at our Shrewsbury location. Yew ward is a 12-bed male acute unit, while Willow ward is a 20-bed male rehabilitation unit.

Your primary focus will be to assist service users in their mental health recovery journey by building therapeutic relationships and providing support with daily tasks. This role emphasizes individualised care plans to enhance their well-being and quality of life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with nurses within a team environment to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the ward, prioritizing patient-centered care at all times.
  • Engage in direct support activities with service users, including facilitating 1:1 sessions, group activities, and section 17 leave arrangements.
  • Contribute actively to multidisciplinary team meetings and staff discussions, sharing insights and perspectives on service user needs.
  • Provide supportive and therapeutic observations, documenting changes in behavior and emotional well-being accurately.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development by participating in training opportunities and staying informed about best practices in mental health care.

Essential Requirements

  • Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care or equivalent qualification (NVQ 2 in Health and Social Care with demonstrable evidence of numeracy and literacy skills).
  • Experience working effectively as part of a team and delivering customer-focused service.
  • Knowledge and understanding of mental health issues, access to services, and promotion strategies.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage situations involving high emotional intensity.
