Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Trainee Thoracic Surgical Care Practitioner to join our esteemed team at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our cardiothoracic theatre team, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and expertise in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pre-operative Care
    • Participate in various clinics and outpatient activities to prepare patients for surgery.
    • Assist in the preparation of patients for surgery, including venepuncture and urinary catheterization.
    • Display X-rays, CT scans, and PET scans, and assist in interpreting angiograms.
  • Peri-operative Care
    • Undertake surgical procedures such as VATS, bronchoscopy, and PV blocks.
    • Assist in the closure of soft tissue sternal and chest wounds.
    • Apply dressings to wounds and use local anaesthetic and PV blocks as required.
  • Post-operative Care
    • Participate in post-operative assessments of patients, focusing on wound assessment and the prevention of infection.
    • Identify surgical problems and complications, and assist in the post-operative education of patients.
    • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to maintain an efficient and safe service.
  • Professional Development
    • Undertake surgical care practitioner training to MSc level.
    • Take responsibility for own personal and professional development.
    • Participate in the appraisal process and act as a role model for colleagues.
  • Management Duties
    • Maintain effective communication systems and disseminate information to all Trust and local policies and procedures.
    • Act as a specialist practitioner and assist in the assessment of care needs and the development of standards of care.
    • Initiate and develop flexible and innovative approaches to meet the needs of patients.
    Requirements
    • Qualifications
      • Evidence of a clinical-based qualification.
      • Education to degree level.
    • Experience
      • Clinical experience.
      • Post-qualification experience.
    • Knowledge
      • Knowledge of human anatomy.
      • Knowledge of clinical standards and audit.
      • Ability to integrate national policies and guidelines in local practice and policy.
    • Skills
      • Manual dexterity.
      • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
      • Interpersonal skills.
      • Communication skills.
      • Ability to communicate with patients in an empathetic manner.
