Position Overview

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust is seeking a dedicated and skilled Physiotherapy Practitioner to enhance our in-patient medical team.

The medical units at our Trust deliver acute healthcare services to a diverse patient population, addressing a wide range of medical conditions including renal, endocrinology, respiratory, cardiology, infectious diseases, chronic conditions, and oncology. We are in search of a Physiotherapy Practitioner who possesses the experience and enthusiasm to deliver therapeutic services across various specialties. A comprehensive understanding of diverse patient needs and the respiratory expertise to support our on-call service is essential, along with a commitment to exploring and advancing your area of specialization. Your professional development will be supported through our specialized Simulation Training program designed for on-call personnel.

Our Cardiac Unit stands as a premier facility for the assessment, treatment, and management of patients with a broad spectrum of heart conditions, and we serve as the regional hub for Nephrology and Transplantation. We cater to a population of up to one million, providing extensive renal services, including all forms of dialysis for acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and end-stage renal failure, as well as both deceased donor and living transplantation.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves managing a caseload of patients transitioning from Critical Care, focusing on their rehabilitation journey, enhancing exercise capacity, and facilitating functional recovery.

The Medicine Therapy Team addresses the following patient specialties (not exhaustive):

  • Cardiology
  • Renal
  • Respiratory
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology & Haematology
  • General Acute Medicine

We offer a two-week supernumerary program to assist with your orientation into the Trust and the broader Therapy teams.

  • Deliver Respiratory Physiotherapy, including participation in the on-call rota and weekend duties
  • Facilitate the learning and development of students and colleagues
  • Enhance clinical skills and knowledge in a specific area of interest related to patient groups (e.g., frailty, specific clinical conditions, prehabilitation/acute rehabilitation)
  • Engage in 7-day working patterns as necessary

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain professionalism, legal accountability, and responsibility for all aspects of your work, managing clinical risks within your caseload.
  • Manage a clinical caseload of complex patients, providing advanced therapeutic assessments and evaluations, along with detailed treatment plans centered on patient goals within ward/department settings.
  • Function as an autonomous practitioner and integral member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to discussions and influencing decisions regarding patient care programs, and assuming the role of care coordinator when appropriate.
  • Implement treatment using a variety of modalities and clinical reasoning to select the most suitable techniques, evaluating, modifying, and documenting all interventions and outcomes to meet patient needs.
  • Utilize advanced manual treatment skills requiring coordination, sensation, and dexterity.
  • Adhere to the standards of professional conduct set by the CSP & HCPC, and comply with local care pathways, policies, and standards.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication networks with patients, caregivers, multidisciplinary teams, and other agencies across health, social care, and the private sector, both locally and regionally.
  • Contribute to the clinical governance and quality agenda of the Group and Trust, including setting and monitoring practice standards, clinical risks, and health and safety protocols.
  • Lead information management within your area of responsibility to ensure high-quality, up-to-date written and electronic records and activity data are maintained in accordance with professional and Trust standards, and produced in a timely manner.
  • Be aware of and assist in managing resources and equipment necessary to meet service needs in your clinical area, reporting any faults as necessary.
