Job Overview

The role involves working independently to conduct and document various cardiology assessments as mandated by the department, ensuring a safe, effective, and efficient cardiology service.

You will support Clinical Physiologists in delivering high-quality healthcare to patients within the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This position encompasses providing services to both inpatients and outpatients across all wards, units, peripheral hospitals, and community locations within the Trust.

You will be responsible for the initial assessment of patients who are unwell or present concerning ECG results.

Effective communication with on-site and DCU personnel, including Clinical Physiologists and Associate/Assistant Practitioners, is essential when operating at peripheral hospitals and community sites.

You will collaborate as part of a team, receiving guidance and oversight from Clinical Physiologists and Associate Practitioners as needed.

Training and mentoring staff and students in performing 12-lead ECGs, Holter monitoring, and Ambulatory Blood Pressure monitoring will be part of your responsibilities.

Additionally, you will serve as a primary trainer in utilizing IMPAX, Heart Station, and Sentinel systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and urgent ECGs for adult and pediatric patients, ensuring a high-quality service for both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Prepare ECG and blood pressure monitoring equipment for ambulatory use, attaching devices and providing clear instructions to patients to optimize data collection. Collaborate with Clinical Physiologists/Associate Practitioners in reporting findings.
  • Identify and manage unwell patients or ECG irregularities that require immediate attention, escalating issues as necessary.
  • Actively participate in the resuscitation of patients experiencing ischemic episodes or cardiac arrest during clinical evaluations.
  • Provide support and guidance to patients, caregivers, and medical teams following cardiology investigations.
  • Stay informed about advancements in cardiology to ensure continuous personal and professional development.
  • Assess and maintain equipment for safe operation during cardiology assessments.
  • Perform clerical tasks as required.
  • Organize and prepare patient information for investigations, ensuring accuracy in equipment setup.
  • Engage in clinical audits and governance initiatives at both departmental and Trust-wide levels.
  • Serve as a key trainer for the IMPAX Scheduler, Heart Station, and Sentinel systems.
  • Coordinate and conduct annual evaluations for staff involved in ECG, Holter monitoring, and Ambulatory Blood Pressure monitoring.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • GCSE Grade 4/C in Maths and English or equivalent qualification or experience.
  • Successful completion of the SCST Certificate in Electrocardiography.

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Substantial experience in the Diagnostic Cardiology Unit at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals as a Healthcare Science Support Worker.

Further Training

Essential Criteria

  • Proficiency in using computer systems, including Sentinel, IMPAX, and HeartStation.
