About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Researcher to join our team at BT. As a key member of our research commercialisation team, you will play a critical role in driving the commercialisation of our research outputs and intellectual property.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute a commercialisation strategy that aligns with BT's business objectives and priorities.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities for external commercialisation of research outputs and IP, including licensing, spinout, venture building, incubation, sale, and litigation.
  • Conduct ecosystem and opportunity analysis, including proposing and articulating commercialisation options and securing stakeholder support.
  • Perform patent review activities, including the study of technical patent documentation and review of patent search reports.
  • Undertake defensive analysis to assess retaliatory, competitive, commercial, and reputational risks associated with assertion/commercialisation initiatives.
  • Negotiate commercial terms to achieve a beneficial outcome for BT, with a focus on revenue generation.
  • Support outbound litigation strategy and actions, working closely with Group counsel and BT lines of business.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation and provide regular reports on commercialisation activities, including financial forecasting and performance.
Requirements
  • Graduate degree in a STEM field, Business Administration, International Relations, Law, Economics, or a related field.
  • Experience in technical, engineering, project management, development, deployment, or similar roles relevant to BT Group products, services, and technologies.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to analyse complex technical information, including research papers and patents.
  • Ability to conduct landscaping, ecosystem analysis, and market research to identify opportunities and threats.
  • Understanding of commercial considerations involved in commercial negotiations and aptitude for negotiation, marketing, sales, and/or relationship development.
  • Ability to understand terms of legal agreements, with guidance from legal counsel, and their implications.
