Proposals Engineering Specialist

The Proposals Engineering Specialist is an integral part of the Technical Solutions Division. The primary duty of this role is to create conceptual designs in response to client inquiries. This position encompasses cost estimation for the inquiry and the formulation of a proposal to support the final solution. Responsibilities will include engaging in customer communication and meetings, both virtually and through on-site visits.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop engineering concept designs to support technical solutions for all inquiries.
  • Assist the project team in estimating costs for project variations as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Solutions team on larger commercial projects.
  • Maintain the inquiry and forecast report for weekly sales meetings, ensuring new inquiries are entered into the Enquiry folder.

Customer Engagement:

  • Follow up on sales leads assigned by management.
  • Participate in customer meetings (virtually or on-site) to clarify project scope and review RFQs.
  • Communicate with customers to address any questions regarding potential projects, inquiries, or RFQs, including project timelines and any issues that may impact costs and delivery.
  • Relay information to the Technical Solutions Manager or senior management regarding project scope, deadlines, equipment selection, and other relevant criteria.

Design Responsibilities:

  • Create concept designs (layouts and equipment) for small commercial projects to aid in cost estimation and inclusion in sales proposals.
  • Develop layout designs for larger commercial projects (2D and/or 3D) for cost estimation and sales proposals.
  • Understand standard and custom equipment to be utilized in concept designs.
  • Source equipment from OEM suppliers, including individual components for equipment design.
  • Generate alternative solutions in consultation with the Technical Solutions Manager or senior management.
  • Coordinate design reviews with management upon completion of concept designs.
  • Draft the initial Functional Design Specification (FDS) to support the concept design.

Cost Estimation:

  • Validate the technical aspects of projects, including schedules, high elevation drive calculations, cycle times, and overall equipment performance.
  • Complete cost estimates for small commercial projects under £250K using the estimation template.
  • Prepare cost estimates for bespoke equipment within larger commercial projects using the estimating template.
  • Ensure equipment costs are estimated using the latest component prices, updating the estimate sheet with current rates and costs aligned with the delivery schedule.
  • Ensure consistent information is provided to external suppliers, typically through an RFQ associated with the inquiry.
  • Organize internal review meetings upon completion of estimates with management for sales margin approval before inclusion in proposals.

Proposal Development:
(For small inquiries under £250K)

  • Draft proposals or letters of offer utilizing the current template.
  • Proposals must reflect solutions that include external supplier content and align with customer requirements.
  • Proposals should detail how installation and delivery will be managed.
  • Include any caveats, exclusions, final acceptance criteria, on-site safety measures, final documentation, Terms & Conditions, etc.

Position Requirements:

  • Proficient in English, both written and spoken.
* Minimum of 10 years of experience in Material Handling (Logistics & Warehousing, Automotive) engineering, with at least 5 years in engineering or sales (Logistics & Warehousing, Automotive)

  • Strong technical background in mechanical and/or electrical/controls engineering.
  • Proficient in ACAD / Inventor / Solidworks or similar software.
  • Practical knowledge of equipment design, logistics warehousing, conveyors, automation, and/or electrical/controls.
