About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Midwife to join our team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the care and support of women and their families throughout a multiple pregnancy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver a service that is equitable, evidence-based, and consistent with local and national recommendations, holding specialist knowledge relating to twins, triplets, and quad pregnancies.
  • Have knowledge and skills that include understanding all aspects of effective care for women expecting a multiple pregnancy during the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal period.
  • Lead and develop services working with the nominated multiple births multidisciplinary team to ensure continuity and consistency of care.
  • Be able to provide evidence-based, competent, and confident care to women with multiple pregnancy during antenatal, labour, and postnatal care.
  • Have an expert knowledge of multiple pregnancy, management options, and effectively signpost to other services or support groups.
  • Understand the importance of monitoring both mother and babies during pregnancy, intrapartum, and postnatally.
  • Facilitate midwife-led clinics, face-to-face, home visits, and telephone and online services for clinical decision-making conversations and care provision as required.
  • Be able to provide information to the woman and her partner about expectations for antenatal, labour, and postnatal care, which is appropriate to individual women's specific educational needs.
  • Be able to deliver parent education through the antenatal and postnatal period for the woman (her partner and family).
  • Be able to assess mental health and wellbeing of both parents and acting/referring accordingly.
  • Be able to undertake consultations independently, including assessment, history taking, physical and psychological assessment, and ensure that all women attending the service have appropriate follow-up care in place.
  • To triage referrals and allocate women onto the appropriate lists and ensure that these women are aware of their appointments and plan of care.
  • Take responsibility for the coordination of the consultant-led lists, and to assist the lead consultants in invasive procedures as required.
Operational Management
  • Be able to work independently or as part of a team to meet tight deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Be actively engaged in service development, commissioning, and provision of complex care pathways.
  • Contribute to the Antenatal Services Manager of the Day responsibilities, including cover in the absence of Antenatal Services managers.
  • As required, support the team in undertaking performance development reviews, including reviewing the performance measures framework.
  • Monitor sickness, absence, and competence issues in line with Trust Policy as required.
  • Completion of roster in line with Trust schedule and approve annual leave.
  • Manage recruitment and selection of staff in line with Trust Policy.
Clinical Governance, Audit, and Research
  • Influence and develop policy making and clinical guidelines internally and externally, necessary to support the specialist midwifery service.
  • Lead and participate in audit and research and benchmarking activities to ensure effective, safe, and evidence-based practice.
  • Promote and encourage midwifery practice research in all relevant clinical areas, supporting the NUH Non-Medical research strategy.
  • Provide and promote clinical excellence that reflects the Trust's Clinical Governance Strategies, including meeting the Standards for Better Health.
  • Promote the speciality by publishing and presenting innovations and research findings locally and nationally.
  • Actively promote the specialist service through dissemination of in-depth specialist knowledge, both locally and nationally, establishing robust networks.
  • Identify and develop proposals and business cases as required for future service innovation.
  • Act as a role model and clinical resource, demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership in the specialist area.
  • Lead in investigation of incidents, complaints, when required, including detailed reports/letters to complainants/external investigations as required.
Patient and Public Involvement and Experience
  • Promote the philosophy of women-centred care and establish and maintain a supportive relationship with the woman and her family at all times.
  • Promote patient and public involvement and enhance their experience by developing new initiatives that support women-centred care.
  • Contribute to the Directorate and Service strategies for raising the profile of patient and public involvement and embedding this within own sphere of practice.
  • Service evaluation, including women's views (and their partners) on the care they have received.
  • Be responsible for production of the Patient information leaflets, ensuring that they are appropriate to evidence-based information.
Education, Training, and Practice Development
  • Lead the implementation of specialist education and training to all members of the clinical team and midwifery staff within the Directorate, in collaboration with the Practice Development Matron.
  • Actively encouraging lifelong learning and personal development through appraisal and Knowledge and Skills framework (KSF) development plans.
  • Lead the development of a women-focused education and information giving strategy within the speciality.
  • Demonstrate continuous evaluation of practice and make changes where appropriate, within the defined speciality.
  • Use Education forums and Networks proactively, sharing good practice and innovation with others.
  • Liaise with other groups and assist with the delivery of multi-professional and interprofessional learning.
  • Provide specialist education teaching, learning, and mentoring for pre and post-registration students when required and actively contribute to the delivery of the Universities curriculum.
