As a Financial Operations Manager at Wincanton, you will be instrumental in the Group Transport Finance Team. Your primary responsibility will be to instill financial discipline within the organization while critically evaluating existing processes and methodologies. This role is accountable for the preparation of management accounts, assessing our performance against forecasts, and strategizing on how to address any discrepancies.

Our function integrates the daily commercial and financial management of transport with strategic initiatives aimed at maximizing the value we deliver to our clients and the broader organization.

Reporting to the Commercial Manager, this position offers an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic finance team.

This is a hybrid role, requiring three days a week on-site presence. The position is based at our distribution center, with regular travel to another site.

Compensation is competitive, up to £55,000, depending on experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee periodic profit and loss reporting, balance sheet management, customer invoicing, and reconciliation.
  • Develop budgeting and flexible mechanisms to enhance performance and deepen understanding of operational cost drivers.
  • Create customer reporting packages to ensure consistency across the finance team.
  • Analyze key variances and the factors influencing them.
  • Serve as a primary contact for internal and external audits, promoting governance over financial processes and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgeting and forecasting requirements.
  • Prepare and present weekly customer reports in collaboration with the Commercial Manager.
  • Challenge the business to identify and enhance operational metrics.
  • Actively participate in the development of data analytics in decision-making processes and improve its application within the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Fully qualified or actively pursuing an accounting qualification (ACCA, CIMA, ACA) or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with logistics operations is preferred but not mandatory.
  • A proactive individual capable of managing workload under tight deadlines.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel and experience with large datasets are advantageous.
  • Solid understanding of budgeting and ledger management.
  • Experience in questioning and challenging operational and senior management regarding costs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement in overall contract performance.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster strong working relationships at all levels.
