Basildon, Essex, United Kingdom Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Psychological Associate in Clinical Practice to become a vital member of our established Community Adult Eating Disorder Service team.

In this role, you will collaborate with Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, psychological therapists, and Assistant Psychologists as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT). Our teams highly value psychological services and are committed to a collaborative and comprehensive approach to care.

You will be joining a supportive and innovative service that prioritizes the wellbeing of its staff.

Key Responsibilities

We invite applications for the Band 6 Psychological Associate in Clinical Practice, ideally with experience in working with adults facing mental health challenges, particularly in community environments. Experience with eating disorders is highly desirable. Psychological Associates are expected to operate independently with appropriate guidance, functioning within their professional scope under the supervision of a qualified psychologist. The primary aim of this role is to deliver high-quality, evidence-based psychological interventions, often assisting individuals with long-standing or complex issues. Psychological Associates focus on specific populations, thus providing a more defined range of activities compared to Clinical or Counselling Psychologists.

The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong desire to enhance their clinical and research capabilities and be adaptable in their approach. Responsibilities will include co-facilitating group therapy sessions and delivering clinical treatments under supervision.

About Our Organization

Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust is looking for motivated individuals who align with our core values of Care, Learn, and Empower. In return, we offer a variety of benefits and professional development opportunities, including:

  • Season Ticket Loans
  • NHS staff discounts
  • Comprehensive training facilities and opportunities
  • Annual leave purchasing and selling scheme
  • Flexible working arrangements from day one
  • Salary Sacrifice schemes, including lease cars and Cycle to Work

We actively support flexible working for all employees. You are encouraged to discuss potential flexible working options with the hiring manager for this role.

Role Responsibilities

Please refer to the attached Job Description and Person Specification for a detailed list of responsibilities.

The Psychological Associate in Clinical Practice is a new role within the psychological workforce, supporting the broader NHS initiative to enhance psychological services. This position addresses a recognized skills gap between assistant psychologists and qualified clinical psychologists. Psychological Associates are equipped to practice independently with appropriate support, working within their professional scope under the guidance of a registered clinical psychologist.

As a qualified Psychological Associate, you will provide effective, evidence-based care in accordance with national and local guidelines, managing a caseload and making proactive care delivery decisions within your scope of practice and under supervision. You will be responsible for planning, assessing, implementing, and evaluating care programs. Psychological Associates are expected to maintain a compassionate, caring, and safe environment for clients.

The overarching goal of this role is to deliver high-quality, evidence-based psychological interventions, utilizing formulations derived from specialized psychological assessments, and effectively engaging with diverse populations. You will also leverage applied service-related research to support service evaluation and improvement.

Psychological Associates work alongside other psychological practitioners, including Assistant Psychologists, Psychological Therapists, and Practitioner Psychologists, as well as other professionals within the multidisciplinary team. They focus on specific populations, thus providing a more defined range of activities compared to Clinical Psychologists.

This position is part of the Community Adult Eating Disorder Service, where psychological practitioners are well-integrated with other professions and are highly valued by their colleagues. Psychological practitioners enjoy collaborating closely with MDT colleagues, contributing to care plans, and supporting staff in developing their skills in delivering psychologically informed interventions. The service is part of a collaborative effort to provide specialized care closer to home, working alongside other teams and local organizations to ensure high-quality and socially inclusive recovery.
