Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive Consultant Anaesthetic services for both elective and emergency surgical procedures, including preoperative evaluations and postoperative management.
  • Engage in an Anaesthetic On-Call Rota and provide weekend emergency or trauma support as required.
  • Facilitate the delivery of consultant-led perioperative care.
  • Provide high-quality anaesthetic services while demonstrating flexibility in work arrangements.
  • Oversee and mentor junior anaesthetists, fostering their professional development.
  • Collaborate with the acute pain management team to ensure effective postoperative pain relief for patients.
  • Participate in pre-assessment and high-risk patient clinics.
  • Contribute to the education of medical students and postgraduates, engage in research initiatives, and manage administrative responsibilities.
  • Work alongside the Clinical Governance team to enhance patient safety protocols.
  • Exhibit adaptability to assist in managing the workload of the Clinical Management Group.

Job Duties:

The primary goal is to maintain the highest standards of patient care through proactive initiatives and ongoing improvements.

  • Ensure the provision of safe and effective anaesthetic services for both elective and emergency cases, including preoperative and postoperative care.
  • Participate in the Consultant Anaesthetist non-resident on-call rota and weekend resident rota.
  • Support the Consultant-led Perioperative Medicine Service.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in supporting colleagues' workloads, including covering for authorized absences.
  • Contribute to service development and strategic planning in collaboration with departmental consultants, local GPs, and healthcare commissioners.
  • Supervise and guide junior medical staff, adhering to local employment and human resources policies.
  • Engage in teaching, examination, and accreditation responsibilities as necessary, contributing to medical education efforts.
  • Participate in medical audits and adhere to the Trust's Clinical Governance processes in line with GMC guidelines.
  • Attend continuing professional development opportunities, ensuring all duties meet the highest standards and align with current quality initiatives.

Candidate Profile

Qualifications/Training

Essential:

  • Full GMC registration
  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Fully accredited for higher specialist training or eligibility for inclusion in the Specialist Register within six months of the interview date or actively working towards CESR requirements.

Desirable:

  • Membership in relevant specialist societies or associations
  • Higher degree such as MSc, MD, or equivalent

Experience/Clinical Skills

Essential:

  • Fully trained in Anaesthesia
  • Excellent clinical skills, capable of fulfilling all aspects of the job plan
  • Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to resolve issues

Desirable:

  • Evidence of clinical or research dedication and a relevant specialty interest

Communication Skills

Essential:

  • Demonstrable proficiency in written and spoken English for effective communication with patients and colleagues
  • Empathetic and understanding, able to consider diverse perspectives
