Overview

The Scottish Government is committed to managing Scotland's national forests and land through its agency, Forestry & Land Scotland (FLS). Covering approximately 640,000 hectares, FLS plays a crucial role in contributing positively to the environment and the economy. With an annual timber income of around £85 million and a total turnover exceeding £120 million, FLS is the largest provider of outdoor recreation in Scotland, attracting over ten million visitors each year.

This is a pivotal moment for FLS as we embark on a transformative journey towards financial sustainability. Our goal is to ensure that FLS fulfills its Vision: "forests and land that Scotland can be proud of." Achieving this requires an innovative mindset and a proactive approach to exploring new markets, forming partnerships, and identifying funding opportunities while efficiently managing existing resources.

We are in search of a strategic and visionary leader to take on the role of Director of Corporate Services and Transformation. This permanent position at Senior Civil Service Level 1 (SCS1) will oversee one of four Directorates supporting five Regions. Flexibility in location is available across Scotland, with in-office attendance typically required two days a week, to be discussed with the successful candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transformation: Spearheading the agency-wide transformation agenda to achieve a financially sustainable model, promoting a culture focused on commercial returns, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement.
  • Strategic Development: Crafting and implementing a comprehensive Corporate Services and Transformation strategy that aligns with FLS's goals, enhancing operational effectiveness and ensuring compliance with legal obligations.
  • Corporate Leadership: Supporting the Chief Executive as a member of the Strategic Board and Executive Leadership Team to drive FLS's business strategy.
  • Directorate Leadership: Establishing a clear vision for the Directorate that aligns with stakeholder needs and engaging across FLS to achieve it.
  • Operational Excellence: Ensuring high standards in Finance, People, Communications, and Government services, while managing a team of approximately 150 staff.
  • Performance Management: Enhancing FLS's performance management framework, including the development of a corporate balance scorecard to meet agency objectives.
  • Governance and Assurance: Streamlining governance processes to facilitate agile decision-making, ensuring compliance with statutory responsibilities and promoting diversity and inclusion at all levels.
