Project Objectives

This funding initiative aims to support collaborative, physics-driven projects that tackle pressing issues such as climate change, energy sustainability, and capacity enhancement within African economies. Eligible applicants must be affiliated with a UK research institution that qualifies for STFC funding and must collaborate with a project co-lead based in a research institution located in one of the following African countries: Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.

Project Timeline

Projects are expected to commence by February 2025 and conclude by March 2027. The funding will cover up to 80% of the full economic cost (FEC) for projects, with 100% funding available for international collaborators.

Eligibility Criteria

This funding opportunity is open to research teams engaged in collaborative projects between the UK and Africa. We:

  • Encourage partnerships with other UK and African research entities from eligible nations.
  • Promote applications from diverse research groups.
  • Support submissions from female researchers.
  • Welcome applications from individuals at any career stage, in accordance with STFC eligibility standards.
Exclusions

Projects that do not meet the following criteria will not be considered:

  • Single research organization projects.
  • Involvement of researchers from African nations outside the specified six.
  • Project leads from non-UK research organizations.
  • Large-scale infrastructure initiatives.
International Collaboration

Project leads from non-UK institutions are ineligible for this funding opportunity. It is essential that applications include at least one project co-lead from an eligible African research organization.
