This funding initiative is designed to assist early- to mid-career materials scientists in establishing connections and collaborations with prominent UK research programs. The aim is to enhance their research capabilities, broaden their research perspectives, or facilitate the translation of their findings into practical applications.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must be affiliated with a UK research institution that qualifies for Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funding.
The full economic cost (FEC) of the proposed project can reach up to £312,500, with EPSRC covering 80% of the FEC.
Who Can ApplyThis funding opportunity is targeted at early to mid-career materials researchers aiming to advance their work by connecting with established UK research initiatives. The definition of early to mid-career is broad, encompassing individuals from those newly appointed to their first permanent academic role to those with a modest grant portfolio seeking to expand their professional network.
Applicants should provide adequate evidence in the 'Applicant and team capability to deliver' section of the application form to demonstrate their early to mid-career status. Eligibility will be assessed based on overall funding history and portfolio rather than years post-PhD or job title. The diversity of career experiences is valued, and alternative career paths are recognized.
ExclusionsThe following individuals are not eligible to apply:
- Established academics with extensive research experience and significant contributions to their field over a long period.
- Individuals holding leadership roles on major EPSRC flagship grants, including:
- The Henry Royce Institute
- Programme grants
- Research hubs
- Prosperity partnerships
- National research facilities
- Networks
- Strategic Priorities Fund

International ApplicantsInternational applicants may serve as project co-leads (previously co-investigators) if based in a Norwegian institution.
