Position Overview

Role Summary

In the capacity of SEND Mediation and Tribunal Assistant, you will provide essential support to the Tribunal Manager and Officer in the establishment of internal tribunal and mediation frameworks. Your responsibilities will include processing and monitoring new appeals while collaborating effectively to ensure:

  • Effective decision-making by AfC and its partners and stakeholders.
  • Strong representation of AfC to achieve meaningful outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Your daily tasks will encompass:

  • Handling casework, preparing responses, and occasionally representing AfC in appeals and mediation sessions.
  • Utilizing your negotiation and persuasion skills to de-escalate issues prior to formal appeal processes.
  • Maintaining calm and constructive communication, particularly in challenging situations.
  • Participating in SEND panels and delivering training related to SEND tribunals and mediation when necessary.
  • Engaging with current SEND legislation and case law, including the Code of Practice and SEND Regulations.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A degree-level education complemented by a relevant professional qualification.
  • Experience and training in SEND-related areas (Level 3 or higher is desirable).
  • A proven track record in the complex domain of SEND.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with diverse stakeholders, including children, young people, and families.
  • Experience representing the Local Authority at SEN and Disability Tribunals.
  • Expertise in mediation and conflict resolution meetings.
  • Proficiency in organizing and leading conferences with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to prepare responses for appeal hearings and liaise with legal services and SEND coordinators.
  • Knowledge of legal aspects pertaining to SEND cases.
  • Flexibility and the capability to work independently with minimal oversight.
