We are seeking a dedicated and adaptable professional to join our In-Patient Unit (IPU) team as a Lead Palliative Care Nurse. In this role, you will play a crucial part in guiding our multidisciplinary team to provide exceptional end-of-life care to our patients.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Duties
Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients and their families, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to address identified needs.
Work closely with senior nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to deliver specialized palliative care within tailored care plans.
Implement care strategies based on initial and ongoing evaluations, promptly communicating any changes in patient conditions to the relevant team members.
Exhibit a supportive and realistic approach to palliative care, ensuring that the physiological, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural needs of patients and their families are met.
Recognize physiological and psychosocial indicators that necessitate therapeutic interventions, responding appropriately to potential outcomes.
Maintain accurate documentation related to patient care and contribute to the enhancement of nursing documentation practices.
Assess the informational needs of patients and their families, utilizing suitable formats to ensure clear understanding of holistic care requirements.
Encourage patient and family involvement in care planning, providing education and support for all palliative care treatment needs.
2. Leadership and Management
In the absence of senior nursing staff, take charge of the In-Patient Unit, ensuring a skilled nursing presence to facilitate collaborative nursing interventions.
Foster a supportive work environment that promotes staff morale through mutual respect and collaboration.
Act as a mentor and supervisor, providing guidance and a positive learning atmosphere for new and junior staff within the IPU.
Ensure adherence to organizational policies and procedures, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to uphold clinical standards of care.
Promote a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors, and staff.
3. Educational Responsibilities
Stay informed about current advancements and research in palliative care, utilizing educational opportunities to maintain high standards of care.
Provide training and education to junior team members, addressing their developmental needs in specialist nursing skills.
Act as a mentor and assessor for students and junior staff, assisting in evaluating their competencies.
Conduct reviews and annual appraisals for staff members.
Develop expertise in a specific area of practice and serve as a resource for other nursing staff, providing teaching as necessary.
4. Professional Development
Ensure compliance with registration requirements and remain knowledgeable about the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct.
Commit to personal professional development through participation in educational programs and leadership courses.
Contribute to creating a culture within the IPU that reflects the organization's values.
5. Additional Responsibilities
Undertake any other duties or general tasks as required, demonstrating flexibility in working across various locations within the hospice organization.
Lead by example, embodying the values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- Registered Nurse with the NMC.
- Relevant experience in palliative care or similar fields.
- Experience in leading nursing teams.
- Mentorship experience for junior staff.
Desirable:
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to articulate information clearly and sensitively.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Capacity to work effectively in emotionally challenging environments.
- Proficiency in computer use.
- Willingness to develop teaching and assessment skills.
- Evidence of leadership development within a multidisciplinary team.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Palliative care qualification (such as ECEPC).
- Evidence of ongoing professional development in specialist palliative care.
- Training in assessment.
- Completion of post-registration courses.
- Diploma or degree-level education.
Desirable:
- Understanding of hospice philosophy and specialist palliative care services.
- Awareness of clinical supervision and reflective practice.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Flexibility in shift patterns.
- Commitment to the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization.
