Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated psychologist to become a vital member of our community Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (FCAMHS). This role offers flexibility for candidates interested in either full-time or part-time employment. The FCAMHS team operates regionally, providing services across various areas.

Established in 2018, our innovative service collaborates with multiple agencies to ensure cohesive care delivery across health, social services, education, and youth justice sectors. Our primary goal is to enhance outcomes for children and young individuals exhibiting high-risk behaviors or suspected mental health and neurodevelopmental issues. The role encompasses both advisory and direct assessment responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team, supported by a Senior Leadership Team that includes a Consultant Psychologist and Consultant Psychiatrist. Opportunities for networking within psychology groups across the Trust and participation in specialized forensic peer supervision will be available.

The psychologist will deliver specialized psychological services to children, young individuals, and their families or caregivers. Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive psychological assessments for those with complex needs and providing psychological consultation to other professionals involved in their care. Additionally, the role involves engaging in service development initiatives and research in collaboration with the Psychological Therapies Lead and Senior Leadership Team.

Job Duties

1. Conduct specialized psychological assessments for children referred to the service, utilizing a variety of complex psychological data sources, including psychometric tests and structured interviews.

2. Provide psychologically informed formulations, consultations, and advice based on thorough analyses of complex information regarding referred children and their specific risks.

3. Occasionally exercise autonomous clinical responsibility for implementing a range of psychological interventions, adapting approaches based on feedback and monitoring.

4. Complete structured risk assessments, leveraging specialized knowledge in forensic psychology.

5. Supervise the delivery of psychological interventions as part of a multi-disciplinary care approach when appropriate.

6. Communicate sensitive and confidential information obtained through assessments and interventions to relevant parties, ensuring clarity and professionalism.

7. Actively participate in risk assessment and management for children who may pose risks to themselves or others.

8. Produce timely clinical and forensic reports that convey complex analyses and recommendations to the appropriate audience.

9. Support safe transitions for children between community and secure settings, ensuring coordinated services are available.

10. Advocate for children and their families to ensure access to necessary support and services.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

Postgraduate or Doctorate level qualification enabling practice as a clinical, forensic, or counseling psychologist. Current HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist. Evidence of ongoing professional development.

Desirable

Experience in forensic risk assessment.

Skills and Competencies

Essential

Proficiency in complex psychological assessment, formulation, intervention, and management. Ability to integrate psychological theories with clinical practice. Contribution to risk assessments and management plans. Strong advocacy skills for patients and their needs. Flexibility and cooperation in working with diverse teams and agencies. Capacity to maintain professionalism in challenging interpersonal situations.

Knowledge and Understanding

Essential

Knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology, psychopathology models, and clinical psychometrics. Understanding of clinical caseload management within a team. Awareness of the impact of trauma and neglect. Familiarity with evidence-based practices relevant to the role. Knowledge of risk assessment and management protocols. Understanding of clinical governance principles.

Ability to travel independently across the designated service area.
