Brighton, Brighton and Hove, United Kingdom University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job Overview

The successful candidate will collaborate with the PACU Team Leader and the Perioperative Practice Education Team to enhance and advocate for evidence-based clinical practices within the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit. You will play a pivotal role in fostering a constructive learning atmosphere, promoting reflective practices through the execution of clinically focused teaching and education, enabling PACU practitioners to meet their ongoing professional and personal development objectives. You will provide both clinical and managerial assistance to the PACU Team Leader, offering clinical guidance, support, and advice to colleagues while overseeing PACU operations in the Team Leader's absence. Your collaboration with the PACU Team Leader, Theatre Managers, theatre coordinators, and the Perioperative Practice Education Team will be essential in delivering specialized advice and guidance to other personnel. You will engage in direct patient care for complex level one (e.g., immediate post-operative patients) and level two patients (e.g., High Dependency and major surgery). This position entails a balanced focus on both Education and Clinical responsibilities.

Main Duties of the Role

- Cultivate a positive learning environment and endorse a culture of reflective practice to support learning, providing constructive feedback and educational guidance to nursing staff regarding their professional and personal growth; in collaboration with the PACU Team Leader and PACU Band 6s.
- Assist staff in developing personal development plans and portfolios.
- Lead the creation and execution of the PACU education pathway and broader educational initiatives within the Theatres department, ensuring all staff possess the necessary skills and knowledge, utilizing initiative and discretion to manage workload independently.
- Serve as a resource for staff, offering instruction, support, and guidance to perioperative staff and students, while sensitively addressing poor practices and escalating concerns as necessary.
- Act in place of the Team Leader by organizing and planning clinical activities regularly, taking responsibility for the daily management of a team, prioritizing and coordinating elective and emergency patient care within the perioperative setting.
- Maintain your own specialized clinical knowledge and skills.
- Disseminate accurate and relevant information to PACU practitioners and the wider perioperative team, promoting the philosophy of evidence-based practice, analyzing, interpreting, and applying research findings to ensure effective and innovative nursing practices.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

- Lead the development and implementation of the PACU education pathway and educational initiatives across the wider Theatres department, ensuring all staff are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge, using initiative and discretion to manage workload independently.
- Deputize for the Team Leader by planning and organizing clinical activities regularly, with responsibility for the daily management of a group of staff, prioritizing and planning elective and emergency patient care within the perioperative environment.
- Collaborate with departmental practice educators across all theatre departments to promote cohesive and consistent best practices, sharing resources, ideas, and knowledge, while identifying educational and professional development needs for both new and existing staff.
- Supervise the maintenance of statutory and mandatory training requirements for practitioners working in PACU.
- Assist in standardizing and maintaining accurate data records in accordance with Trust policy.
- Work alongside the PACU Team Leader, perioperative practice education, Theatre Managers, and theatre Team Leaders to develop standards and guidelines that support the training and development of staff.
- Assist the PACU Team Leader in the recruitment process for PACU staff, particularly for educational programs, and in developing the education pathway for new PACU practitioners.
- Attend mandatory training updates as required.
- Participate in the Trust's appraisal process to discuss how your role will contribute to delivering the best possible care to our patients and facilitate any service changes.
