Role Overview

The design department is responsible for innovating and refining rocket motor systems and associated technologies. This role involves comprehensive analysis of rocket motor configurations, including ballistic performance forecasting, propellant charge, and hardware stress evaluation, alongside the maintenance of essential design documentation.

The incumbent will perform critical stress analysis functions and serve as the structural technical authority for various rocket motor products. Key responsibilities will focus on executing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using software such as Abaqus on rocket motor components, including metals, rubber/rigid insulants, bondlines, and energetic propellant charges. A solid understanding of material science and engineering principles, particularly non-linear viscoelasticity, is highly beneficial.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Duties

  • Conduct structural and thermal analysis of both new and existing rocket motor systems using FEA software.
  • Utilize various software tools and programming languages, including Abaqus, Altair-Hyperworks, Fortran, and Matlab.
  • Perform rheological analysis of material testing outcomes and provide guidance to the technical team for the validation and verification of FEA models.
  • Develop and oversee motor structural test plans, ensuring thorough assessment of structural testing results.
  • Act as the structural performance technical authority for assigned projects, facilitating project meetings, investigations, design reviews, and collaboration with customer stress engineers.
  • Prepare and deliver essential project documentation, including structural analysis reports, test plans, and design records.
  • Contribute expert knowledge to qualifications reports.
  • Stay informed about industry advancements and innovations, enhancing personal expertise and leading new technology research initiatives while ensuring timely and cost-effective project delivery.
  • Organize, plan, and prioritize tasks to guarantee timely completion of responsibilities.
  • Maintain an updated job list and associated delivery metrics.
  • Identify potential risks and issues affecting delivery timelines, quality, and costs, and communicate solutions effectively.
  • Perform any additional duties as reasonably required in line with the primary responsibilities outlined above.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • A degree in an engineering discipline such as Mechanical, Aerospace, Structural, or a related field like Material Science.

Essential Experience

  • Practical experience with ABAQUS software in a professional or academic setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, and Access.

Desirable Experience

  • Knowledge of material science, especially in composites, viscoelastic materials, and adhesives.
  • Experience with CAD modeling and Altair-Hyperworks.
