The Role
The Computing and Information Services (CIS) department manages a substantial operational budget and oversees numerous transformative initiatives, employing approximately 185 staff members. The Senior Leadership Team collaborates closely with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) across various portfolios, including Strategy and Change, Technical Services, Information Services (IS), and Cyber Security. CIS partners with departments throughout the university to deliver academic, teaching, and administrative services that support the institution's daily operations.

CIS is a collaborative yet challenging environment where high expectations are set for self-motivated individuals who excel in teamwork. The department adopts a hybrid working model tailored to the specific role and individual needs.

As an apprentice, you will be sponsored to pursue a Level 5 Data Engineer apprenticeship. In this role, you will assist in maintaining the daily operations and ongoing enhancements of Computing and Information Services (CIS). Assigned to the Information Systems (IS) Estates and Facilities Solutions (EFS) team, you will ensure the delivery of high-quality IT services across the university, supporting students, staff, and visitors in their use of Durham University IT systems.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Conducting software testing
• Integrating software solutions
• Configuring software applications
• Providing software support and troubleshooting
• Analyzing data and generating insights
• Evaluating user experience through design and analysis
• Authoring and publishing content
• Managing security operations
• Overseeing incident management

To be considered for this position, candidates should demonstrate the following skills and experience:

Essential Criteria:

Qualifications/Experience
1. Five GCSEs at Grade C or Level 4, including English Language and Mathematics.
2. Experience working collaboratively within a team.
3. Proven ability to manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
4. Completion of, or progress towards:
a. Level 3 digital-related apprenticeship at grade Merit or above,
or;
b. 3 A-Level passes at CCC or above, with one subject being a STEM subject (e.g., Maths, Chemistry, Physics, or Computer Science),
or;
c. BTEC Digital/ICT related Level 3 at grade DMM or above,
or;
d. T-Level in an Engineering or Digital pathway at grade Merit or above.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge
5. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
6. Proficient digital skills, including experience with digital devices and applications.
7. Ability to collaboratively solve problems and address straightforward issues.
8. Capability to provide guidance and support to colleagues and customers.
9. Basic software coding knowledge acquired through education, previous employment, or personal interests.

Desirable Criteria
1. Awareness of health and safety regulations.

Role Requirements
1. Eligibility for the apprenticeship position requires specific criteria to be met, including not having obtained a higher education qualification at Level 5 or above.
2. Flexibility in working hours is necessary to cover all duties, especially during major incidents or software upgrades.
3. A four-week annual leave restriction is in place at the start of the academic year to support staff and students during peak periods.
