Position Overview

This pivotal leadership position is focused on advancing Innovation and Research within the NHS, encompassing a diverse and dynamic range of initiatives. The ideal candidate will spearhead Life Sciences Policy and Strategy for NHS England, oversee groundbreaking programs such as Horizon Scanning and Demand Signalling, and cultivate a public-facing presence to enhance the team's mission.

Key Responsibilities

The Head of Life Sciences Strategy is an integral member of the senior leadership team within the IRLSS. This role is highly visible and involves regular engagement with government officials, NHS England executives, and senior stakeholders from various sectors, including industry. The team will be responsible for formulating significant national innovation and research initiatives and managing collaborative efforts such as establishing industry partnerships, evaluating the value of NHS health data, and exploring innovative funding mechanisms for advancements.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Comprehensive understanding of the innovation and research ecosystems, including key challenges and organizational frameworks, with the ability to establish credibility and trust among senior leaders in government, academia, industry, and the NHS.
  • Proven capability to design and manage multiple initiatives, particularly the Horizon Scanning and Demand Signalling program.
  • Extensive background in developing and executing cross-government strategies.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking skills to address complex issues and translate them into actionable programs.
  • Outstanding communication abilities to engage effectively with government officials, senior stakeholders, and NHS England executives.
  • The capacity to create a public-facing profile that supports the team's objectives.

Job Duties

This leadership role within NHS England entails the following responsibilities:

  • Providing strategic direction on life sciences policy and strategy, ensuring alignment with overarching priorities and ministerial objectives.
  • Overseeing the execution of these priorities in collaboration with the Director of IRLSS and the NHS executive team.
  • Leading the Horizon Scanning and Demand Signalling team to develop a portfolio that meets the evolving needs of NHS England.
  • Managing the AAC operations and delivery team to support the IRLSS sub-directorate.
  • Directing the Innovation Ecosystem Programme, which reports to the Chief Executive of the NHS and the Life Sciences Council.

Qualifications and Skills
