Job Description

Role Overview

The Scottish Government is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to fill the role of His Majesty's Chief Inspector of Education in Scotland. This is a unique opportunity to lead a new independent education inspectorate, driving improvement in Scottish education and ensuring that children and young people receive a high-quality education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of a new inspection framework, ensuring that it is evidence-based and effective in driving improvement.
  • Provide expert advice to the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, Scottish Ministers, and Scottish Government officials on education policy and practice.
  • Oversee the management of the inspectorate's operating budgets and resources, ensuring that they are used efficiently and effectively.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including education professionals, parents, and the wider community.

Requirements

  • A senior education professional with a proven track record of leading and delivering improvements in excellence and equity.
  • Experience of operating successfully at board or senior level, using strong political acuity and collaborative leadership skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide evidence-based advice and guidance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.

Working Arrangements

This is a permanent, pensionable Senior Civil Service Director (SCS2) role located in Glasgow. The Scottish Government operates a flexible, hybrid approach to working, but some in-office attendance will be required to meet business needs for this role. Relocation expenses may be available.
