Senior Biomedical Scientist – Haematology & Blood Services

An exceptional opportunity has emerged within the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership's (ESEL) Haematology Division, as we currently have openings for Senior Biomedical Scientists across our collaborative sites.

We seek dedicated team members with a proactive approach to working flexibly, committed to enhancing the clinical services of the Trust and addressing the needs of our patients by engaging in a 24-hour Agenda for Change shift system.

The successful candidates will primarily operate at one of the designated sites but may be required to provide coverage and support to other ESEL locations based on service requirements.

The ESEL partnership encompasses the following hub and spoke locations: Royal London Hospital (hub), St Bartholomew's Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, Newham University Hospital, Homerton Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Woolwich), and University Hospital Lewisham.

All laboratories are accredited by UKAS, utilize Winpath LIMS, and are equipped with Sysmex systems in Haematology and Coagulation across all locations. Blood Transfusion employs Bio-Rad and Grifols analysers to support one of the largest Blood Transfusion departments in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

The Specialist Haematology section at the Royal London Hospital is equipped with Bio-Rad Variant II and Sebia Capillarys systems, while the Specialist Haemostasis section offers a comprehensive testing repertoire to support the respective Comprehensive Care Centres within Barts Health for conditions such as haemophilia, sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia, and paediatric haematology.

The successful candidate MUST be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist AND have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio.

Note: Candidates who do not possess the completed IBMS Specialist Diploma may be considered but will be employed under an Annex 21 contract, where a percentage of the Specialist Band 6 BMS salary will apply. Training support will be available for the completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma across a day and night working pattern.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organization providing pathology services to various NHS Trusts. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is structured on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital serving as the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) available at all other hospital sites. Pathology services include Blood Sciences (Haematology, Blood Transfusion, and Biochemistry), Infectious Diseases (Microbiology and Virology), Cellular Pathology (Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology, and mortuary services), Immunology, Cytogenetics, and Molecular Haematology.

The total operating costs across the Partnership were approximately £126m per annum, with a workforce establishment of around 822 WTE. Essential Criteria

BSc. Biomedical Science or equivalent, holder of the IBMS Certificate of Competence, Registration Portfolio. Evidence of continuous professional development. Registered as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Desirable Criteria

Registered as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Experience

Essential Criteria

At least 3 years of post-HCPC registration diagnostic experience in Haematology & Blood Transfusion. Experience with a computerized laboratory information system. Previous experience working in a large medical laboratory. Experience of working as part of a team.

Desirable Criteria

Experience with a variety of diagnostic techniques in Haematology. Familiarity with the following named IT systems:
• WinPath Enterprise (Clinisys).
• Q-Pulse. Demonstrated ability to use initiative when addressing issues with patients/staff.

Knowledge

Essential Criteria

Advanced scientific knowledge in the relevant discipline. Detailed understanding of UKAS and Quality Management Systems. Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation. Good understanding of governance requirements.

Desirable Criteria

Knowledge of Quality Management Systems and participation in obligatory activities.

Skills

Essential Criteria

Competent in basic laboratory techniques and troubleshooting. Proficient IT skills. Strong time management abilities. Proficient in word processing and spreadsheet applications. Ability to analyze, interpret, and present routine data/results/concepts. Effective communication skills (both written and verbal).

Desirable Criteria

Good keyboard skills. Polite, helpful, and confident demeanor. Familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet applications.
