The Role

Key Responsibilities

The primary objective of this role is to manage Building Regulation applications across the Braintree District and ensure compliance with Building Regulations, fulfilling the Council's statutory responsibilities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting Building Control Managers in enhancing the Council's Building Control Service to maintain high professional standards and customer satisfaction.
  • Overseeing a caseload of building control responsibilities to meet established targets.
  • Reviewing plans and conducting site inspections to verify adherence to building regulations.
  • Engaging with applicants, the public, construction professionals, and regulatory bodies on building control issues.
  • Providing guidance to clients on regulatory compliance and managing demolitions and hazardous structures.
  • Promoting and marketing the Building Control Service locally, providing estimates, and managing service payments.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety policies, representing the Council at relevant committees, and supporting team development.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Skills: Membership in either the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (MCABE) or the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) with a minimum of five years of post-qualification experience; or level five of the LABC Competency Framework. Must have achieved Class 3 or 4 Competency with the Building Safety Regulator. A valid driving license and access to a vehicle for district travel are required.

Knowledge: Extensive understanding of Building Control and related matters (construction, regulations, and legislation), excellent communication and IT skills, and the ability to work independently while fostering team development and making informed decisions. A commitment to service enhancement, adaptability, and effective negotiation skills is essential.

Experience: Proven track record in executing technical tasks to a high standard and meeting targets; in decision-making regarding complex and diverse Building Control issues; in managing hazardous structures and demolitions; and in drafting and presenting reports and correspondence on intricate matters.
