London, Greater London, United Kingdom Smart Pension Ltd Full time

Location: London, UK or Kraków, Poland

Position Overview: A pivotal role as 'Engineering Director' with extensive influence and opportunity for impact.

Smart Pension Ltd is a prominent technology leader in the financial services sector, seeking an Engineering Director to drive our next phase of growth. With a robust backing from top-tier investors and a decade of expansion, we serve government and financial clients globally, equipped with a solid technological foundation and a promising future. This role offers a unique chance for an Engineering Director eager to effect meaningful change through technical excellence and a focus on team leadership.

About Smart Pension Ltd: A technology-driven organization reshaping its industry

In the UK, we power 'Smart Pension', a workplace pension platform that serves nearly 1.5 million savers; in Ireland, we support one of the largest pension providers; and in the Middle East, our technology facilitates financial savings in a rapidly evolving market. Our mission is to revolutionize retirement savings and financial wellness across generations worldwide.

Candidate Profile - Our Future Engineering Director

We seek an individual with a contemporary and technical engineering background, ideally from private equity-backed firms in the financial sector, with experience in transforming engineering practices to be more commercially focused, particularly in data-intensive environments.

As the Engineering Director at Smart, you will embody a people-centric leadership style, collaborating closely with senior Engineering Managers to elevate engineering standards. Our engineering culture prioritizes collaboration and has fostered a clean codebase that supports our CI/CD pipeline and agile methodologies.

Our Platform

Our platform, Keystone, manages billions in assets and serves millions of savers, presenting opportunities for global expansion of our Platform as a Service. The engineering team requires a leader who is a problem solver, values collaboration, and is committed to achieving business objectives.

We value our culture, seeking a leader who understands the importance of appreciation and influences rather than merely manages their team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive transformation within the technology team to ensure efficient, value-driven outcomes through agile methodologies.
  • Oversee the engineering team, including developers, QA, infrastructure, and service desk, ensuring effective collaboration across all regions.
  • Partner with Solutions and Product Directors to enhance the product development lifecycle.
  • Evaluate current engineering practices and implement continuous improvement initiatives to accelerate development cycles.
  • Enhance automated testing and maintain high test coverage to ensure code quality.
  • Balance architectural aspirations with project delivery, considering performance, reliability, and scalability in alignment with business goals.
  • Possess technical expertise in front-end technologies like JavaScript and React, or back-end technologies such as Ruby on Rails, to support team development.
  • Act as the engineering team's representative to the broader organization, keeping stakeholders informed and engaged.
  • Manage appraisals, salary reviews, and daily workloads in collaboration with the team.
  • Oversee the engineering budget and collaborate with procurement to optimize external expenditures.
  • Lead and develop the engineering organization, including nearshore teams.
  • Identify and address barriers to success proactively.
  • Ensure effective budget planning, resource forecasting, and participation in governance processes.
  • Travel may be required, particularly to locations where engineering teams are based.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a Director, Head of Engineering, or CTO.
  • Demonstrated success in a rapidly scaling technology business within financial services; experience in wealth management or insurance platforms is advantageous.
  • Exceptional leadership skills focused on team development and maximizing engineering talent.
  • Strong understanding of software development methodologies and architectural best practices.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work across departments.
  • Extensive experience in both back-end and front-end development.
  • Able to manage complex projects and multiple stakeholders effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable engaging with all levels of the organization.
  • Experience with API development is essential.
  • Proven track record in software architecture and leading transformation initiatives.
  • Personable and appreciative, fostering a people-first approach in leadership.
  • Familiarity with modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD and infrastructure as code.

Benefits:

At Smart, we prioritize a positive work environment and offer a range of benefits to support our team:

  • 25 days of annual leave, increasing with tenure.
  • £500 annual training budget for professional development.
  • Comprehensive private healthcare, including dental and eyecare.
  • Enhanced sick leave policy.
  • Generous maternity and paternity leave.
  • Life insurance coverage.
  • Fully-paid sabbatical after five years of service.
  • Wellbeing initiatives, including in-office services.
  • Discounts on products from our affiliated companies.

We believe Smart is an exceptional workplace. If you resonate with our mission and values, we look forward to meeting you.
