Division: Design

Purpose of the Role:

  • Oversee Colour & Materials initiatives across various projects, ensuring alignment with business objectives while assisting the CMD Manager with daily operations of the Colour and Materials team.
  • Effectively communicate and escalate critical matters to the Colour and Materials Manager.
  • Act as a deputy to the CMD manager.
  • Provide support to the CMD team for all project deliveries, mentoring both senior and junior designers.
  • Conduct research on market sectors, lifestyles, design, and social trends relevant to current and future projects.
  • Collaborate closely with suppliers to develop materials that meet production specifications.
  • Coordinate with designers, functional groups, marketing, and procurement teams to ensure proposals meet required standards.
  • Represent the Studio/Colour and Materials team in technical and senior meetings as necessary.
  • Create exceptional products that visually narrate their functionality.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Report directly to the CMD Manager.
  • Communicate and address critical issues with the Chief Designer, Design Operations Manager, and Design Director.
  • Define, submit, and manage the CMD design and development budget.
  • Conduct performance appraisals as required, particularly for junior and senior designers.
  • Collaborate with the broader Design, CAS, Clay & Engineering teams to present viable solutions for approval.
  • Contribute to the creation and updating of design standards and processes.
  • Provide input into the Design Strategy.
  • Present and advocate for Colour & Materials concepts to senior management and executive levels.
  • Help instill the design philosophy and principles to foster a robust future design identity.
  • Facilitate brainstorming and concept development sessions to integrate the company's vision.
  • Support the CMD Team in delivering innovative materials and finishes for all projects.
  • Develop Colour & Materials program vision themes and variant lists for all projects.
  • Create and present the Colour & Materials Design research report and Design Intent Report for all projects.
  • Submit plans for long lead-time components across all projects.
  • Contribute to the Marketing Features List.
  • Establish and confirm the Trim Level Strategy.
  • Deliver target samples and assist in ensuring design quality in the delivery of master samples for all colours and materials.
  • Reconcile design intent, quality, and manufacturing feasibility with engineering and commercial requirements.

Required Knowledge Skills & Experience:

  • A University Degree in Art and Design or equivalent, with extensive experience as a Colour and Material Designer.
  • Proven track record of delivering Colour & Materials for projects from concept to production.
  • Strong experience in leading and mentoring a high-performance team under tight deadlines.
  • High level of self-motivation, interpersonal skills, initiative, flexibility, and commitment to task completion.
  • Solid experience within an automotive design department.
  • Highly creative with exceptional colour vision, harmony, and an intuitive grasp of perceived value and craftsmanship.
  • In-depth knowledge of automotive and industrial colours and materials.
  • Strong presentation skills to convey and articulate design intentions.
  • Proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Microsoft Office.
  • Essential project planning and management skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Colour & Materials and vehicle design.
