Position Overview
The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) stands as a premier institution in hydrography, focusing on marine geospatial information to enhance safe and secure maritime operations.
As a trading entity under the Ministry of Defence, we are dedicated to supporting defense initiatives, ensuring safe maritime navigation, and facilitating marine development both in the UK and globally.
We are seeking skilled maritime professionals who possess the necessary qualifications and experience to contribute effectively to the maritime sector. If you are ready to leverage your expertise in this capacity, we invite you to consider this opportunity.
The Maritime Advisor role is designed to evaluate new data for the ongoing maintenance of our Sailing Directions Volumes, delivering critical information to aid port access and coastal navigation for various vessels.
Ensuring quality is of utmost importance; this role focuses on maintaining the Sailing Directions (SDs) to be safe, precise, user-friendly, comprehensive, and current, including Section IV Notice to Mariners to support our maritime clientele.
Team members also provide navigational and maritime insights for both existing and forthcoming UKHO products and services, often serving as the 'voice of the customer' due to their maritime expertise.
Joining this team means contributing to our transition towards digital SD volumes.
If selected, you will engage in a structured development program and will be evaluated against a defined skills and competency framework. Upon achieving the required level, typically within a specified timeframe, you will advance to the position of B2 Maritime Advisor.
Key Responsibilities
Upon commencement, Maritime Advisors will be tasked with the following:
- Evaluate new data for its implications on Sailing Directions (SDs) and maintain them in a steady state.
- Recommend actions for Notice to Mariners related to SDs.
- Provide mariner insights for product development.
- Actively seek external information for SD content.
- Prepare, modify, and technically edit Sailing Directions volumes for publication.
Once deemed competent in these responsibilities, you will progress to:
- Verify assessment decisions regarding new information and Notice to Mariners recommendations, offering feedback and guidance to colleagues.
- Collaborate with peers to share knowledge, providing the mariner's perspective on New Charts, New Editions, and new chart schemes during the specification phase.
Additional Responsibilities
- Offer navigational expertise in response to inquiries from both internal and external stakeholders.
- Advise other business areas from a mariner's perspective as needed.
- Continuously enhance personal skills while providing coaching and mentoring to team members.
- Utilize expertise to actively participate in the development and implementation of new processes and practices, reviewing and updating documentation as necessary.
Candidate Profile
This role provides an opportunity to share your external user experience, contributing to the development of our products and services to meet evolving customer needs. We seek team-oriented individuals with a proactive mindset for identifying and implementing improvements in our operations. Attention to detail and the ability to articulate clear written English for user-focused sailing directions are essential.
Qualifications
Officer of the Watch CoC (Unlimited) or Navy Equivalent (Minimum)
Behaviors
During the selection process, candidates will be assessed on the following behaviors:
- Delivering at Pace
- Communicating and Influencing
- Making Effective Decisions
Technical Skills
Candidates will also be evaluated on these technical skills:
- Strong comprehension of passage planning techniques, including the use of nautical publications and charts.
- Relevant experience in practical navigation as a senior or sole watchkeeper.
Benefits
In addition to a competitive salary, the UK Hydrographic Office contributes significantly towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
At the UK Hydrographic Office, we prioritize our employees' well-being and value. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits, including training and development opportunities, well-being support, flexible working arrangements, and access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.
