Contract Type: This is a full-time, fixed-term position on Crick terms and conditions of employment.
Position Overview
The position of Senior Research Scientist in the laboratory at the Crick is multifaceted and fulfilling. It encompasses a variety of responsibilities that ensure the smooth functioning of laboratory activities. This role provides essential support to one or more scientific initiatives or programs. Typical responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with fellow researchers on various projects.
- Offering experimental or technical assistance to team members.
- Innovating new methodologies.
- Conducting independent research projects, designing and executing experiments under the strategic guidance of the group leader.
- Overseeing long-term studies and partnerships with other researchers.
- Engaging in academic activities, including presentations at group meetings, journal clubs, interest group seminars, and scientific conferences.
- Documenting findings for publication and managing revisions.
- Organizing and managing laboratory operations, including maintaining databases, ordering supplies, monitoring budgets, and ensuring routine maintenance of equipment.
- Training and mentoring laboratory personnel in essential techniques, protocols, and equipment usage.
- Coordinating with Science Operations and participating in key meetings.
- Drafting risk assessments and standard operating procedures (SOPs) while providing safety guidance to laboratory staff.
Research Focus
The Vinuesa lab investigates the fundamental mechanisms that drive the generation of high-quality, protective antibody responses while preventing autoimmunity. This includes exploring the cellular and molecular processes that govern the selection of long-lived B cells and human B cell tolerance, as well as the genetic and pathway-related factors contributing to autoimmune diseases. The overarching aim is to leverage the insights gained to enhance diagnostic methods and treatment strategies.
The specific project associated with this recruitment focuses on the identification and isolation of self-reactive (DNA-specific) single B cells utilizing microfluidics, followed by the identification of B cell receptor (BCR) sequences and the generation and characterization of expressed recombinant monoclonal antibodies.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement a human antibody discovery platform aimed at identifying single self-reactive B cells, recombinant expression of their autoantibodies, and characterizing their affinity and specificity.
- Prepare relevant risk assessments.
- Develop a custom database for identified BCR sequences.
- Document methods and results for publication.
- Provide training to laboratory staff on the new methodologies.

Essential Qualifications
- A PhD (or equivalent experience) in Immunology or a related field within Biological Sciences.
- Experience in research involving human B cells and antibody discovery.
- Comprehensive knowledge of B cell biology, humoral immunity, and immunoglobulin genetics.
- Extensive experience in the identification and isolation of antigen-specific single B cells.
- Proficient in the use of microfluidics technology.
- A proven track record in generating and characterizing recombinant monoclonal antibodies, including single B cell PCR, V region cloning, expression, and conducting specificity and affinity assays.
