We are seeking a highly motivated and creative leader to provide clinical leadership to our autism assessment service.

The successful candidate will have strong skills in leadership, service development, consultation, clinical supervision, autism assessment, and in teaching, training, and developing links with services.

Growth of the autism assessment service means that we are excited to be able to recruit a highly motivated, creative, experienced, and compassionate leader to the position of Principal Clinical Psychologist to provide clinical leadership to the pathway. This is a part-time post for 30 hours per week.

The successful candidate will become a member of the MY Psychological Services department, which is a growing health psychology service, offering good opportunities for professional support and development. You will join a supportive team, with a strong focus on personal development and CPD opportunities. We actively encourage and support supervision, CPD, and service-related research.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will have strong skills in leadership, service development, consultation, clinical supervision, autism assessment, and in teaching, training, and developing links with services.

The post holder will provide clinical leadership to the autism assessment component of the service, being responsible for governance and quality, and providing clinical leadership to other professionals. The post holder will provide specialist triage, and assessment to children and families referred through the autism assessment pathway, as well as consultation, formulation, and service development at an MDT level. There will also be regular opportunities to develop and deliver teaching, training, and workshops across the trust and with partner agencies.

Job Responsibilities

To provide a lead role in the psychological assessment of children and young people referred to the autism pathway and contribute positively to the development of the service. The post holder will manage referrals, their own caseload, and will lead the development of the service related to assessment and promote multi-agency support for patients and families outside the Trust.

To be responsible for providing highly developed and specialist psychological assessment and formulation, integrating and interpreting highly complex data derived from a variety of sources including psychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observation, and semi-structured interviews with patients, family members, and others involved in the patient's care.

To make highly skilled evaluations and decisions about assessment outcomes and treatment options, responsible for working with highly complex presentations, taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family, or group.

To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological therapeutic intervention and/or management of a patient's psychological health problems based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the problems and employing methods of proven efficacy. This may involve working with family members, siblings, parents/carers, and others in the system around a child or young person.

To apply highly developed specialist professional knowledge acquired through degree and post-graduate training, augmented by further clinical supervision and extensive training, to provide high-quality care.

To provide clinical opinion regarding the quality of assessments when any formal complaints are made, and to provide guidance to the operational lead regarding how the team should respond clinically to complaints.

To carry out specialised risk assessment and management for patients referred to the service and to provide general advice to other professionals on psychological aspects of risk and protection.

To ensure accurate clinical and audit records are maintained.

To communicate in a sensitive and skilled manner information concerning the assessment, formulation, and treatment plan to the patient themselves, their parents/carers, referral agents, and where appropriate other involved professionals, relatives, or carers.

Person SpecificationQualifications
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 2000) as accredited by the BPS.
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Psychologist with Chartered Status.
  • Trained in clinical supervision and the supervision of doctoral trainees.
  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
Experience
  • Experience of working as a qualified Clinical Psychologist, 3 years post-qualification at a highly specialist level.
  • Experience of the application of psychology in family, group, and individual settings, and different cultural contexts.
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and/or treatment of children, young people, and families (CYPF) across the full range of care settings.
  • Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care.
  • Experience of teaching, training, and providing professional and clinical supervision.
  • Experience of providing clinical and professional leadership to other qualified and non-qualified members of the profession.
  • Experience of contributing to service development within an organisation.
  • Experience of taking a leadership role in developing services.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Doctoral level knowledge of clinical psychology, including highly developed knowledge of clinical psychometrics and appropriate psychological therapies.
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention, and management (including risk assessment and management) frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with colleagues, children, young people, and parents.
