Candidate Profile

Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 2:1 classification.
  • Professional Certifications: Chartered Accountant (CA/ACA) and/or Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) or equivalent qualifications.
Experience:
  • Tax Expertise: Relevant post-qualification experience in tax matters.
  • VAT Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of the UK VAT framework, especially its relevance to Exploration & Production (E&P) and UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) operations. Familiarity with other energy sectors, including renewables and electric vehicle charging, is a plus.
  • Customs Duty: Demonstrated experience or a strong interest in gaining expertise in Customs duty.
  • Company Law: Basic knowledge of company law and some exposure to international transactions involving EU jurisdictions.
  • HMRC Interaction: Proven experience in managing inquiries and securing clearances from HMRC.

Key Responsibilities
  • Fostering Stakeholder Relationships: Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and implement enhancements in indirect tax systems, processes, and frameworks. Promote a culture of continuous improvement to ensure the organization adapts and integrates best practices.
  • Proactive Indirect Tax Advisory: Provide commercial indirect tax guidance to UK business units by evaluating and analyzing proposed transactions prior to commitments, in collaboration with corporate tax colleagues.
  • M&A Transaction Support: Deliver indirect tax advice for mergers and acquisitions, partnering with business development, legal, finance, and other teams to mitigate organizational risk.
  • Legislation Monitoring and Representation: Stay informed about changes in indirect tax legislation, propose value-adding representations, and ensure the organization is prepared for legislative updates.
  • Coaching and Mentoring: Guide and mentor Finance and Tax team members to enhance their technical and interpersonal skills, contributing to team succession planning.
  • HMRC Negotiations: Engage with HMRC on indirect tax matters and audits to resolve inquiries effectively.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Establish relationships with Head Office tax colleagues and coordinate on the French tax implications of business transactions to ensure a cohesive understanding of tax environments, opportunities, and challenges.
  • VAT/Customs Training: Increase business awareness of VAT/Customs issues through foundational tax training and provide specialized training for tax department staff on oil and gas industry taxation and emerging tax developments.
  • Technical Guidance and Support: Provide technical guidance to colleagues in the Tax Department and other support functions on indirect tax issues to achieve optimal business outcomes.
  • Forum Participation: Represent the organization at indirect tax forum meetings and communicate relevant issues to commercial managers in appropriate divisions.

About the Role:

As a vital member of our central tax team, you will act as the UK focal point for TotalEnergies' diverse operations. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Delivering indirect tax guidance and technical expertise.
  • Providing commercial tax advice on VAT and Customs duty.
  • Supporting VAT compliance and procedural matters.
  • Overseeing indirect tax issues across the UK, taking into account the unique cultures and priorities of our separately managed divisions.
