About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Hydrologist to join our team as a Permanent member. As a key member of our Flood Hydrology Improvements Programme, you will play a crucial role in designing, delivering, and advising on improvements projects that reduce flood risk and improve resilience across England.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide hydrological expertise for national strategic projects, including the creation of a framework for benchmarking hydrological approaches and scoping the next generation of UK operational flood estimation approaches.
  2. Advising on technical priorities and delivering improvements to our flood hydrology services.
  3. Collaborate with others from across the EA and hydrological community to ensure improvements are well-designed for end users.
  4. Lead the development of scopes for improvements projects, working with others internally and externally.
  5. Guide and work with suppliers to ensure work is appropriate, proportionate, and of sufficient quality.
  6. Review and sign-off of in-house and commissioned flood hydrology projects.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  1. An in-depth understanding of hydrological processes, how models simulate them, and model limitations.
  2. Extensive experience building and calibrating hydrological models for floods.
  3. A good understanding of the ways flood hydrology is used in practice in England, including the Flood Estimation Handbook methods and extreme value theory.
  4. The ability to foster partnership between diverse groups and create change.
  5. Experience with hydrometric data and an understanding of data limitations.
  6. High standards and a commitment to quality.
  7. Sound scientific reasoning and the ability to make practical compromises.
  8. Good mathematical ability, with the capability to appraise novel hydrological methods.
  9. The ability to build relationships and communicate hydrological concepts to non-technical audiences.
  10. A passion for self-development and coaching others.
Competences

We are looking for candidates with the following competences:

Competence 1: Numerical Modelling and Forecasting

Description: Please tell us how you have used or developed models for practical use to estimate flood risk, whether long-term flood risk or immediate flood forecasts.

Competence 4: Scientific Knowledge

Description: As part of this job, you will be required to review and appraise novel or non-standard methods in flood hydrology. Please tell us about how you have used your scientific understanding of flood hydrology to produce sound, science-based evidence to date.
