Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Engineer to join our team focused on advancing the field of Systems Software Verification. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in formal verification techniques for critical systems software.

The Challenge

Systems software forms the backbone of modern infrastructure, yet it is inherently vulnerable to security flaws and attacks. Bridging the gap between existing verification technologies and conventional development practices is a crucial challenge in ensuring trustworthy software.

Our Approach

The CN project, an ongoing initiative within the VERSE collaboration, aims to revolutionize systems software verification by leveraging separation logic refinement type systems, realistic semantics for C, and integrated testing methodologies. CN's carefully constrained expressiveness enables predictable proof automation and runtime testing of specifications.

Your Contributions

  • Develop and refine the CN verification system, enhancing its capabilities and usability.
  • Apply CN to real-world systems software examples, including contributions to the open-source pKVM hypervisor.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of researchers and developers within the VERSE project and beyond.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of novel verification techniques.
  • Disseminate research findings through publications and presentations.

Qualifications

  • A PhD, or near completion, in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: SMT-based verification, proof assistant verification (e.g., Coq), separation logic, static analysis, OCaml programming language, relaxed concurrency, C programming, and systems code development.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
