Position Overview: The Medical Research Council is looking for a dedicated Mechanical Engineering Trainee to become an integral part of our engineering team. This position focuses on acquiring essential machining expertise and hands-on experience in a supportive workshop environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mastering the operation of milling and turning machinery, both conventional and CNC.
  • Creating detailed models and technical drawings utilizing design software such as SolidWorks.
  • Enhancing skills in mechanical assembly and fitting.
  • Fabricating precision components that adhere to specified design criteria.
  • Engaging in problem-solving activities and collaborating effectively with team members.
  • Executing welding tasks on non-ferrous materials using TIG welding techniques.

Reporting Structure: This role will report directly to the Head of the Mechanical Workshop and will involve collaboration with fellow workshop personnel.

Training Program: As a Mechanical Engineering Trainee, you will participate in a comprehensive training program that includes:

  • Hands-on training in hand fitting, turning, and machining processes.
  • Competency development through practical, on-the-job training.
  • Educational qualifications in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and Machining.

This training will primarily occur in the workplace, supplemented by educational sessions as required.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs, including Mathematics, English, and a Science subject.
  • Experience in teamwork and the ability to take initiative.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.

Desirable Attributes: Candidates with a background in engineering, a keen interest in scientific principles, and familiarity with tools and machinery will be favored.

The ideal applicant will exhibit creativity, the ability to work independently, and strong communication skills. Personal attributes should include a desire to learn and grow, precision in high-pressure situations, and a flexible attitude towards work assignments.
