Position Overview

The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) is at the forefront of shaping housing and community policies across the UK. Our mission is to enhance the living conditions and community engagement through effective governance and innovative solutions.

We are currently looking for a User Researcher who is passionate about empowering local authorities to better serve their communities. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team focused on addressing the pressing challenges in urban planning and community development.

As a User Researcher, you will leverage digital methodologies to tackle the intricate issues surrounding the enhancement of skills and resources for Local Authority planning teams. Your contributions will play a vital role in informing a high-profile policy initiative that directly impacts the future of housing.

In this role, you will:

  • Design and execute research strategies that guide the development, implementation, and assessment of the Planning Capacity and Capability Programme.
  • Collaborate with policy makers and project management teams to highlight the significance of an evidence-based approach in the Programme's execution.
  • Identify and apply suitable research methodologies to yield insightful findings, emphasizing qualitative and innovative techniques such as workshops and interviews.
  • Analyze and interpret complex research data to extract clear insights that address the needs of users within the planning framework, utilizing tools like Dovetail and Mural for collaboration.
  • Communicate research findings effectively through visuals, presentations, and reports, ensuring that insights are integrated into ongoing projects.
  • Support the team with documentation, evidence summaries, and submissions by providing a comprehensive overview of policy impacts and advocating for continuous evaluation of the Programme.
  • Contribute to the team’s research operations, ensuring diverse participant recruitment, proper data management, and compliance with data protection regulations.

Candidate Profile

To be successful in this role, you should possess:

  • Experience in conducting qualitative research, user research, or user-centered design.
  • A solid understanding of various qualitative research and evaluation techniques, with the ability to tailor methods to specific projects and include diverse user perspectives.
  • The capability to comprehend the challenges faced by the team and align research activities to generate relevant insights for informed decision-making.
  • Confidence in leading research initiatives independently and engaging with external experts in research activities.
  • A collaborative mindset, willing to work with colleagues across different disciplines and translate research findings into actionable insights for policy and project management teams.
  • Experience in presenting clear and impactful research insights to both internal and external stakeholders in various formats.
  • The ability to meet demanding deadlines while delivering high-quality outputs, including research plans and reports.
