Position Overview:

In collaboration with senior management, the Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and directing laboratory operations, ensuring adherence to quality and compliance standards. This role involves managing a specialized section of the laboratory, which includes various services, and ensuring that all practices meet or exceed the accreditation requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership:

  • Directs and oversees a specialized section of the laboratory.
  • Takes full accountability for all personnel within the section.
  • Fosters a laboratory culture that prioritizes quality and compliance.
  • Provides around-the-clock support and coverage.
  • Contributes to departmental strategic initiatives.
  • Ensures the upkeep of laboratory equipment and explores new technologies.

Financial Management:

  • Assumes complete financial oversight for the section, including budget preparation and management.
  • Monitors labor costs to meet organizational targets.
  • Collaborates with the Supply Chain department for equipment maintenance agreements.

Quality Assurance and Safety:

  • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Participates in quality assurance programs and prepares necessary reports.
  • Keeps policy and procedure manuals updated and ensures adherence to safety protocols.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Provides expert guidance on technical issues.
  • Plans and implements new methodologies and technologies.
  • Ensures proper functioning and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Human Resources Management:

  • Oversees the recruitment and selection process.
  • Manages onboarding and competency assessments for laboratory staff.
  • Supports employee engagement and performance management initiatives.
  • Coordinates cross-training programs to optimize staff utilization.

Communication:

  • Facilitates regular communication with staff through meetings.
  • Collaborates with senior management to achieve shared objectives.
  • Implements customer service initiatives and values feedback.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Adheres to organizational behavioral standards.

Job Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or an equivalent body.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in the field.
  • 3 years of supervisory experience in a clinical laboratory environment.
  • Familiarity with accreditation requirements, particularly from The Joint Commission and College of American Pathologists.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership capabilities and a deep understanding of scientific principles.
