Assistant Ward Manager - EMPCC Medical Day Ward

The East Midlands Planned Care Centre (EMPCC) represents a significant advancement in healthcare, located within the Leicester General site of University Hospitals Leicester, offering Day case and Outpatient treatment and care for patients across the East Midlands region.

We are seeking a committed and driven Assistant Ward Manager to oversee and support the care of patients receiving treatment in the Medical Day case ward, which will operate as a Nurse Led facility.

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned nurse with demonstrable leadership capabilities, excellent communication skills, and a readiness to assist the Ward Manager in delivering outstanding patient care. Experience in managing a diverse patient population and providing therapeutic interventions such as Blood transfusions, Ascitic drains, and Intravenous Infusions is essential. Proficiency in skills such as venipuncture and cannulation is preferred, although comprehensive training will be provided. Experience in areas such as Gastroenterology, Oncology, or Haematology is crucial for this position.

Key Responsibilities

You will be accountable for the assessment, planning, execution, and evaluation of patient care. Engage in effective clinical leadership and management of the ward team, which includes supervising and guiding other healthcare professionals through all aspects of the care process. Develop and enhance leadership skills, ensuring you can step in and manage the ward in the absence of the Ward Manager. Actively contribute to establishing and maintaining high standards of nursing care, aiming to improve services and the quality of care provided to meet the needs of patients and their families. Serve as a role model, mentoring, teaching, assessing, and supporting students and learners during their placements, while also participating in the education and development of other staff members. Additionally, you will play a vital role in facilitating effective communication among patients, caregivers, clinical staff, and the broader multidisciplinary team. As a proficient role model, you will utilize your expertise to foster the development and skills of others. You will have the chance to apply specialized knowledge, skills, and innovative practices to ensure a high standard of care and maintain patient safety.

Job Responsibilities

Assist and stand in for the Sister / Charge Nurse in managing and organizing the ward/Clinic. Optimize the use of clinical and staff resources, implementing best practices in patient flow, admissions, and discharge processes. Encourage the development of new services within the ward area and support the Sister / Charge Nurse in implementing changes. Maintain effective communication with the Sister / Charge Nurse, the multidisciplinary team, and the Matron regarding patient care, ward management, and organization. Participate in staff recruitment and selection processes, as well as broader recruitment and retention strategies. Conduct yourself professionally and ensure that both you and the ward staff adhere to the UHL Uniform policy. Act as a clinical expert, utilizing your knowledge to enhance the development, skills, and competencies of others. Collaborate with the Education and Practice Development team, Clinical Support Nurses, and Multi-Professional Teams to ensure that educational and developmental opportunities are available for the ward team, enabling staff to perform their roles confidently and competently. Serve as a clinical resource, mentor, assessor, supervisor, or preceptor for learners and staff as needed. Actively promote and engage in clinical supervision, mentorship, or equivalent support mechanisms.

Qualifications

Essential

Registered Nurse with a current NMC PIN. Recognized teaching and assessing qualification or equivalent.

Desirable

Involvement in audit or research activities.

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

Experienced nurse with knowledge of treatments and procedures for Gastroenterology, Oncology, or Haematology patients, including IV infusions, Ascitic drains, and blood transfusions. Demonstrated experience as a Nurse in Charge with strong leadership qualities.

Desirable

Attendance at professional development leadership courses, such as LEO. Proficiency in venipuncture and cannulation.

Communication Skills

Essential

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to serve as a role model and mentor, assessor, and support for learners in the ward. Effective communicator and negotiator.

Desirable

Completion of an advanced communication course. Knowledge of Criteria Led Discharge processes.
