Position Overview

The General Practice Support Assistant role is designed to provide essential support to General Practitioners by managing administrative responsibilities and, when suitable, performing basic clinical tasks. This position offers a remarkable opportunity to become part of our dedicated team, available on a full-time or part-time basis for 24 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Key Responsibilities

The General Practice Support Assistant will facilitate the efficient operation of clinics by executing routine administrative and clinical duties on behalf of the General Practitioners, thereby allowing them to concentrate on patient care.

  • Organizing and prioritizing clinical correspondence for the General Practitioner, directing some communications to other healthcare professionals as necessary.
  • Extracting relevant information from clinical letters for coding and documentation purposes.
  • Coordinating appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up visits for patients.
  • Preparing patients for consultations by gathering brief medical histories and conducting preliminary assessments.
  • Performing basic clinical tasks such as urine testing, blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, and phlebotomy.
  • Completing straightforward forms and essential documentation for the General Practitioner’s review and signature, including insurance and benefits-related forms.
  • Providing explanations of treatment procedures to patients.
  • Assisting the General Practitioner in communicating with external agencies, including coordinating on-call medical advice or admissions.
  • Supporting the General Practitioner with immunization and wound care procedures.

Candidate Profile

Experience

Essential

  • Prior experience in GP administration.

Desirable

  • Experience working within a clinical team environment.
  • Experience across multiple sites or at the Primary Care Network level.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grades A to C.
