Paediatric Emergency Medicine Trust Physician

London, Greater London, United Kingdom North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

This role presents a remarkable opportunity for a junior physician (FY2+) to enhance their expertise in Paediatric Emergency Medicine by engaging in our dynamic Paediatric Emergency Department.

Key Responsibilities

The individual in this position will participate in a dedicated Paediatric ED schedule (self-rostered) and will acquire experience and training in the management of acutely unwell children as well as those with injuries. The department operates as a busy Trauma Unit and is integrated into the North East London Trauma Network. The successful candidate will receive support from a team of three Paediatric Emergency Medicine consultants and seventeen adult Emergency Medicine consultants. Consultant availability in the Paediatric ED extends until 10pm on weekdays and until 8pm on weekends. Registrar assistance is accessible 24/7 from Paediatric registrars and Adult ED registrars.

About Our Institution

The paediatric division is dedicated to training and education, recognized as one of the premier training locations in London. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in weekly paediatric educational sessions and regional Paediatric Emergency Medicine training days, and will also be expected to contribute to the educational development of the multidisciplinary team. Our innovative 'ABC Parents' community outreach initiative provides education on fundamental child health issues to local caregivers, and we enable junior paediatric ED doctors to engage with this project if they choose.

The trust conducts major resuscitation training courses (APLS/EPLS/NLS/ALS/TILS) and features a newly renovated simulation suite with an active ED simulation faculty. The department is committed to Quality Improvement, and successful candidates will be encouraged to influence the future of the department through guideline and pathway development and project work, with training support provided. The department is a member site of PERUKI (Paediatric Emergency Research in UK and Ireland), participating in both national and international research initiatives. Applicants will be supported in cultivating a specific area of interest from these available opportunities.

In March 2017, the paediatric department received an RCPCH regional award for best training site, as nominated by trainees. The Emergency department was rated Good in the CQC inspection.

Job Duties

1. Deliver and uphold a high standard of care for all patients in the Paediatric Emergency Department.
2. Communicate effectively with medical and nursing staff from other disciplines, ancillary personnel, and paramedics to ensure efficient patient management.
3. Provide intermediate level supervision for junior trainees.
4. Engage in quality improvement initiatives.
5. Facilitate the education of junior staff, including nursing personnel within the department.
6. Assist the ED consultants in promoting healthcare to the department's patients in a compassionate and supportive manner.
7. Take a leading role in resuscitation and trauma calls.
8. Middle grade physicians are central to service delivery and supervision, collaborating closely with various specialties in the hospital to ensure optimal patient care. The Trust is fully committed to national care targets, including patient flow through the ED.
