Position Overview

We invite you to become a part of our dedicated pharmacy trials team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which operates across multiple sites.

The team plays a crucial role in supporting the growing Research and Development initiatives of the trust, managing a diverse array of studies that require pharmacy department involvement. This year, we are also expanding our portfolio to include advanced therapy trials.

Your responsibilities will encompass the organization and oversight of forthcoming studies. You will assist in the upkeep of trial medications, including dispensing, labeling, drug accountability, and investigating any discrepancies, as well as monitoring the temperature of areas storing clinical trial medications.

No prior experience in clinical trials is necessary, as comprehensive training will be provided. However, strong organizational and communication skills are essential, along with a demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and adaptable.

Participation in evening, weekend, and bank holiday shifts on a rotational basis will be required.

Qualifications Required

  • Nationally recognized Pharmacy Technician qualification, registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Candidates nearing completion of their qualification and registration will also be considered.
  • Accredited accuracy checking qualification or a willingness to pursue this qualification.
  • A flexible approach coupled with effective time management skills.

Main Responsibilities

  • Engage in clinical trial feasibility assessments and risk evaluations.
  • Participate in Pharmacy initiation meetings for new drug trials as needed.
  • Assist in the preparation of Pharmacy study documentation for new drug trials.
  • Receive, store, dispense, and maintain accountability for trial medications, adhering to established procedures.
  • Ensure accurate completion of trial documentation, implement amendments, and maintain organized trial files in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with research personnel, including medical and nursing staff, to ensure the safe and efficient conduct of drug trials.
  • Support Pharmacists in training and development initiatives.
  • Create and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for trials.
  • Meet with Clinical Research Associates for monitoring visits and follow up on identified actions.
  • Monitor temperatures and report any excursions promptly.
  • Conduct incident reviews and implement Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
  • Perform audits of trials and trial services.
  • Provide support for regulatory inspections.
  • Maintain the clinical trials database accurately.
  • Facilitate regular invoicing for trials to sponsors as required.
  • Engage in specialized training and development to meet job skill requirements.
