Quantum Imaging Research Associate

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Imperial College London Full time

Position Overview:

We are seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to become a vital member of the Quantum Imaging research team within the Department of Physics. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic experimentalist or theorist with a strong background in quantum optics or nonlinear optics.

Research Focus:

This research initiative aims to advance technology through the innovative method of quantum imaging utilizing undetected photons. This approach enables imaging of an object through two correlated beams: one in the infrared spectrum that illuminates the object, and another in the visible spectrum that captures its image. This methodology provides a significant technological advantage, allowing for infrared imaging with cost-effective visible cameras. The primary focus of this project is on infrared spectroscopy for cancer diagnosis, developed in collaboration with a company established by academics from Imperial.

Key Objectives:

  1. Implement the imaging technique for cancer diagnosis.
  2. Advance imaging capabilities with undetected photons.

Responsibilities:

The post holder will engage in independent and original research within the UK Quantum Hub in Sensing, Imaging, and Timing (QuSIT). Responsibilities include submitting publications to peer-reviewed journals and assisting in the administration of the Research Group. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and capable of collaborating effectively with graduate students. Interdisciplinary research and cooperation with theorists from other groups within the Department of Physics are essential components of this project.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Physics, Physical Science, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated potential and originality in research, evidenced by a strong publication record appropriate for the candidate's career stage.

Desirable Experience:

  • Quantum optics
  • Nonlinear optics
  • Mid-infrared optics
  • Imaging and microscopy
  • Quantum technology
  • Instrumentation control
  • Numerical simulations

We expect the post holder to possess a strong sense of curiosity, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to work alongside interdisciplinary scientists. Research integrity and conscientiousness are essential attributes.

Career Development:

  • Opportunity to advance your career at a leading institution dedicated to scientific progress.
  • Access to sector-leading resources and opportunities for professional growth.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package, including generous leave and pension schemes.
  • Engaging and dynamic multidisciplinary research environment.
