Quantum Imaging Research Scientist

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Imperial College London Full time

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to contribute to the Quantum Imaging research initiative within the Department of Physics. This role is ideal for enthusiastic experimentalists or theorists with a solid background in quantum optics or nonlinear optics.

Project Focus:

The research endeavor aims to advance technology utilizing quantum imaging techniques with undetected photons. This innovative approach enables imaging of an object through two correlated beams: one in the infrared spectrum illuminating the object, while the other in the visible spectrum captures its image on a camera. This method presents significant advantages for infrared imaging, utilizing cost-effective visible cameras. The primary application of this project is to enhance infrared spectroscopy for cancer diagnosis, in collaboration with a company established by Imperial academics. This aligns with governmental initiatives supporting quantum technology.

Key Objectives:

  • Implement the imaging technique for cancer diagnosis.
  • Develop imaging methodologies utilizing undetected photons.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will engage in independent and innovative research within the UK Quantum Hub in Sensing, Imaging, and Timing (QuSIT). Responsibilities include:

  • Publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Assisting in the administration of the Research Group.
  • Collaborating with graduate students and interdisciplinary teams.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Physics, Physical Science, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated potential and originality in research, evidenced by a strong publication record relevant to your career stage.

Desirable Experience:

  • Quantum optics
  • Nonlinear optics
  • Mid-infrared optics
  • Imaging and microscopy techniques
  • Quantum technology applications
  • Instrumentation control
  • Numerical simulation skills

The ideal candidate will possess a strong sense of curiosity, be self-driven, and demonstrate an eagerness to collaborate with interdisciplinary scientists. A commitment to research integrity and diligence is essential.

Benefits:

  • Opportunity to advance your career at a prestigious institution dedicated to scientific progress.
  • Access to sector-leading resources and potential for career advancement.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package, including generous leave and pension schemes.
  • A dynamic and collaborative research environment.
