Position Overview

Ecclesiastical Insurance, a proud member of the Benefact Group, is seeking a Senior Underwriter to enhance our underwriting team in our Birmingham office.

The successful candidate will provide outstanding customer service as part of the underwriting division, contributing to Ecclesiastical's commitment to delivering quality service on the first attempt.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee a designated portfolio of cases.
  • Serve as a point of reference for the team, offering coaching and training in a timely manner.
  • Identify and implement tailored training for individuals or regions.
  • Assist less experienced team members in their interactions with brokers.
  • Develop, negotiate, and profitably underwrite new and existing business within personal authority and aligned with brand strategy.
  • Provide on-site underwriting support at partner and customer locations as necessary.
  • Organize, prioritize, and manage personal workload to achieve set objectives and meet service level agreements.
  • Utilize effective communication methods (telephone, face-to-face) to uphold Ecclesiastical's commitment to first-time success in maintaining strong internal and external relationships.
  • Act on individual audit findings and established action plans within agreed timelines to enhance personal performance.
  • Conduct file audits and audit actions in accordance with the regional plan, participating in audit consistency meetings and offering feedback for improvement to the Regional Underwriting Manager.
  • Comprehend and operate within the regulatory framework, identifying and escalating any potential risks to the organization.
  • Recognize complaints, address them, and resolve in accordance with company policy.
  • Perform audits and provide constructive feedback, coaching, and training as needed.
  • Support team management as required.
  • Continuously expand personal technical and niche knowledge through networking, industry literature, and formal training.
  • Maintain and develop underwriting authority while taking responsibility for personal professionalism and growth.
  • Deliver underwriting excellence through specialized knowledge and commercial awareness.
  • Share best practices and insights that would benefit the broader team.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and simplification in processes and workflows.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs including Maths and English at grade C or above or equivalent experience.
  • Qualified Dip CII or a commitment to achieve within an agreed timeframe.
  • Graduate from Ecclesiastical's internal Underwriting academy at level 2 within an agreed timeframe.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the market, industry, and company.
  • A proven history of delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Proficient IT skills (to be assessed).
  • Strong verbal communication abilities.
  • Experience in coaching within a commercial setting.
  • Experience in effective stakeholder management within a commercial context.
