Position Overview

Ecclesiastical Insurance Group, a proud member of the Benefact Group, is seeking a Senior Underwriter to enhance our underwriting division in the Birmingham office.

The successful candidate will provide outstanding client service as part of the underwriting team, contributing to Ecclesiastical's commitment to delivering accurate and efficient service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee a designated portfolio of cases.
  • Serve as a point of reference for the team, offering guidance and training as needed.
  • Identify and implement tailored training for team members or specific regions.
  • Assist junior team members in their interactions with brokers.
  • Develop, negotiate, and effectively underwrite new and existing business within established authority and brand strategy.
  • Provide on-site underwriting support at partner and client locations as necessary.
  • Organize, prioritize, and manage individual tasks to achieve set objectives and meet service level agreements.
  • Utilize various communication methods (telephone, face-to-face) to uphold Ecclesiastical's commitment to first-time accuracy in maintaining successful internal and external relationships.
  • Act on audit findings and agreed action plans within set timelines to enhance personal performance.
  • Conduct file audits and follow up on audit actions in accordance with the regional plan, participating in audit consistency meetings and providing constructive feedback for improvement.
  • Comprehend and operate within the regulatory framework, identifying and escalating any potential risks to the organization.
  • Recognize complaints, address them, and resolve in accordance with company policy.
  • Conduct audits and offer feedback, coaching, and training as appropriate.
  • Support team management as required.
  • Continuously expand personal technical and niche knowledge through networking, industry resources, and formal training.
  • Maintain and enhance underwriting authority, taking responsibility for personal professionalism and development.
  • Deliver underwriting excellence through specialized knowledge and support.
  • Share best practices and insights that would benefit the broader team.
  • Identify opportunities for ongoing improvement and simplification in processes and operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs including Maths and English at grade C or above or equivalent experience.
  • Qualified Dip CII or commitment to achieve within an agreed timeframe.
  • Graduate from Ecclesiastical's internal Underwriting academy at level 2 within an agreed timeframe.
  • Strong understanding of market, industry, and company dynamics.
  • Demonstrated history of providing exceptional customer service.
  • Proficient IT skills (assessments will be conducted).
  • Excellent verbal communication abilities.
  • Experience in coaching within a commercial setting.
  • Proven track record of effective stakeholder management in a business environment.
