This department also extends its expertise to provide guidance and support to governmental bodies and external organizations regarding emergency response strategies and countermeasures.

The Radiochemistry Group plays a crucial role in delivering analytical assessments of environmental and biological specimens, thereby supporting emergency response initiatives and offering commercial services to a diverse clientele. All operations are conducted under the stringent standards of ISO 17025 accreditation.

The successful candidate will engage in a variety of laboratory tasks, including the preparation and analysis of radiochemical and instrumental samples from environmental and biological sources, ensuring compliance with the Radiochemistry Group's commercial agreements and quality assurance protocols. They will also be equipped to perform swift analyses of samples in the aftermath of a nuclear incident or emergency.

Key responsibilities will include:

Sample Management: Efficiently handle various sample types, tracking them through the internal management system, logging customer samples, and coordinating with both internal and external stakeholders.
Analytical Procedures: Conduct analyses utilizing a range of radiochemical methodologies and instrumentation, adhering to ISO 17025 UKAS accredited standards. Evaluate and interpret data, ensuring accuracy in calculations and data entry, while identifying trends or anomalies for discussion with senior personnel.
Field Sampling: Occasionally travel off-site to collect environmental samples for subsequent analysis.
Laboratory Maintenance: Uphold cleanliness and organization within the laboratory, managing sample storage and disposal in line with established procedures.
Quality Assurance: Perform daily quality control checks and take ownership of designated laboratory equipment. Participate in internal audits as required.
Emergency Preparedness: Engage in emergency drills to refine rapid analytical techniques and remain prepared to conduct analyses following any real or suspected radiation emergencies.
Additional Duties: Undertake any other relevant tasks as assigned by line management.

Detailed Responsibilities

The RHED leads the UKHSA's emergency response and preparedness initiatives concerning radiation and nuclear incidents. The Radiochemistry Group is dedicated to providing precise analytical measurements of environmental and biological samples, supporting emergency response recommendations, and offering commercial services to a wide array of clients, including government entities and external organizations. All activities are conducted under the rigorous ISO 17025 accreditation.

Upon completion of training under ISO 17025, the selected candidate will be tasked with a range of responsibilities, including laboratory preparation, radiochemical analysis, and instrumental analysis of various samples in support of the Radiochemistry Group's objectives and quality assurance programs. They will also play a pivotal role in emergency exercises and rapid analysis following nuclear incidents.

As the role evolves, there will be opportunities to lead small projects aligned with the Radiochemistry Group's goals, such as research initiatives or enhancements to existing methodologies.

The position may also involve travel within the UK to support contractual obligations or to engage with the broader scientific community, including participation in scientific conferences.
