About the Role

As a Wind-Up Consultant at Hymans Robertson, you will play a crucial role in guiding clients through their wind-up journey, collaborating with Trustee Boards and Sponsoring Employers of UK defined benefit pension schemes.

You will be responsible for providing advice to clients, establishing relationships with key decision-makers to facilitate project management, and mentoring less experienced team members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Client Delivery
    • Oversee multiple wind-up projects, acting as the main point of contact for trustees and other stakeholders
    • Provide guidance and direction in planning and executing scheme wind-ups
    • Lead or assist with strategic and technical aspects of wind-ups, such as assessing scheme factors against insurer factors, conducting lump sum exercises, contributing to funding reserves, and preparing surplus balance sheets
    • Identify potential wind-up cases and aid in their endgame planning
    • Contribute to the development of the Scheme wind-up proposition, fostering relationships within the team, and exchanging ideas
    • Offer training to clients
    • Collaborate with client contacts to establish work budgets and deadlines, ensuring service agreements are in place
    • Promote effective communication within client teams to facilitate work delivery and comprehension of client needs
    • Generate client invoices within set deadlines and following internal procedures
  • Practice Development
    • Actively contribute to the firm's growth by providing high-quality advice as part of a client team
    • Understand client requirements to offer solutions and nurture client relationships
    • Lead projects or endorse new service initiatives
    • Pursue new business opportunities and support business development ventures
    • Engage in the management, mentoring, and training of junior staff
    • Participate in internal forums to provide insights into the firm's strategic direction
    • Enhance the practice's technical knowledge through continuous professional development and peer review of colleagues' work
  • Working Practices
    • Expand internal and external networks
    • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to all client team members
    • Ensure efficient delivery of core services in line with utilization and recovery goals
    • Present work clearly to clients and colleagues
    • Conduct work systematically and in compliance with professional and internal standards
    • Adhere to the firm's Information Security protocols
    • Manage work on designated clients to ensure timely and budget-aligned completion, including maintaining project plans
    • Stay updated on pensions law and practice developments
    • Contribute to the preparation of technical papers for internal and external publications as needed
    Requirements
    • Ideal candidate should possess experience in consulting for pension schemes, preferably in Trustee Executive, actuarial, or scheme management positions
    • Deep understanding of pension management, a history of client-facing roles, and some exposure to new business and broader pensions consulting are advantageous
    • Hold a professional qualification (or part-qualification) in pensions (e.g., APMI, AFPC, or IFoA)
    • Preferably possess an Honours Degree
    • Educational background at least to A' level/Scottish Higher level or equivalent experience
