We are looking for a knowledgeable and motivated Clinical Scientist to lead our DNA section within the Clinical Transplantation Laboratory. The successful applicant will be expected to maintain HCPC Registration as a Clinical Scientist in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, along with extensive experience in molecular typing techniques and team leadership.

Key Responsibilities

The Clinical Transplantation Laboratory, accredited to ISO 15189 and EFI standards, is among the leading facilities in the UK for solid organ transplantation, having supported numerous transplant procedures in the past year and currently undergoing expansion. We offer a comprehensive H&I service to various adult and pediatric transplant centers across the region, covering a wide range of transplant programs.

Our laboratory employs advanced HLA genotyping methods, including PCR-based techniques such as NGS, SSOP, qPCR, and SSP, alongside Luminex and flow cytometric methods for antibody analysis and patient crossmatching. We utilize a specialized Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and a Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure high standards.

Professional Duties

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Engage at a senior level in all laboratory operations, including sample processing, testing, result interpretation, quality assurance, and staff training.
  • Oversee the workflow in the DNA section, ensuring the delivery of a high-quality service.
  • Manage the allocation of tasks among Biomedical Scientists and Clinical Scientists, ensuring consistent service availability.
  • Take responsibility for the identification of Class I and II alleles through molecular techniques.
  • Verify the accuracy and interpretation of results generated by laboratory colleagues, adhering to national guidelines.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of all laboratory activities.
  • Ensure timely reporting of results and assist in the preparation of final reports as needed.
  • Participate in the on-call rota, managing unsupervised work and reporting results outside regular hours.
  • Respond to inquiries from service users, providing guidance on available tests and result interpretation.
  • Collaborate with other tissue typing laboratories for data and sample sharing.

Scientific Contributions

  • Deliver a high level of laboratory expertise in tissue typing.
  • Assist in troubleshooting laboratory issues.
  • Maintain up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure compliance among laboratory staff.
  • Conduct audits and quality control exercises to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of molecular tests.
  • Stay informed about current literature and advancements in the field, introducing new methodologies as appropriate.
  • Represent the laboratory at various meetings and conferences, sharing findings and insights.

Management and Administrative Duties

  • Contribute to the development of new methodologies and equipment evaluation.
  • Support the Director in achieving laboratory objectives and managing staff recruitment.
  • Assist in managing laboratory funding and procurement activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations in collaboration with relevant officers.
  • Work with senior staff to monitor and allocate workloads effectively.

Research and Development

  • Initiate and maintain research interests, actively participating in ongoing projects.
  • Encourage collaborative studies with other departments and institutions.
  • Present research findings at appropriate forums.

Training and Development

  • Provide training in tissue typing and molecular techniques to laboratory staff and visiting researchers.
  • Assist in delivering educational services to clinicians and trainees.
  • Ensure all staff maintain the necessary training and competence levels.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the DNA service.
  • Perform essential laboratory tasks as required.
  • Ensure high standards of scientific practice and documentation are upheld.
  • Manage equipment maintenance and service contracts.
  • Monitor resource utilization for efficiency.
Qualifications and Experience
  • First or second-class honours degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • MSc in a related scientific field.
  • HCPC State registration as a Clinical Scientist.
  • PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
  • Quality or Management qualification.
